M. Richey and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Van Fleet, left today by auto for Ladd Canyon, where they will kill a bird or two and enjoy a few days of undisturbed rest in the wilds of that canyon. " E. P. Oliver, the insurance man, is expected home this evening from u tour through Central Oregon and coast points. Rev. G. II. Houston, who for sev eral days has been the gueBt of Dr and Mrs. Stevenson, returned this morning to his home in Nyssa, Ore gon. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Bird, formerly of Wallowa, are guests today of Dr. and Mrs. J. D. Gillillan, while en route to the Columbia River and conference which meets at Coeur d'Alene. Mrs. Fred Schilke . and daughter Fredericks and Mrs. William Morri son, and Mr. Morrison, are expected home tonight from an extended visit at Portland and the coast. Mrs. Sarah Smith. Misses Jamie Longworth and Orchid Smith, who have been visiting with Mrs. Smith's daughter, Mrs. Upton H. Glbbs, left Monday night for their home in Min nesota via Salt Lake' and Denver. The council meeting tonight will probably include the' election of J. E. Reynolds as councilman to succeed David Bay in the second ward, and some houtine discussion regarding paving. - ELLIOT I() ASYLUM HOI Henry P. Elliott, the man who was arrested at Hllgard, charged with bur glarizing the store of J. D. Casey, and has been confined in the county jail for some time, was this morning taken before County Judge Henry, on the complaint of F. P. Childers, charged with Being Insane. He was examined PURCHASED A transfer was made today of the house and one lot which has been the home of Dr. and Mrs. F. E. Moore for the past five years. The purchaser is Henry T. Hill, who with hi3 wife and little daughter will make . La Grande their future home. Mr. Hill recently sold his dam site farm to the by Dr. M. K. Hall, who pronounced Meadowbrook Irrigation company and him insane. He was commuted to tne insane asylum at Salem. The attend ant will probably arrive tonigni or tomorrow and convey him to his fu ture home. Dr. Moore still owns the two hillside lots east of his recent, home and may build again, al though he and his wife plan to live at Hotel Foley the coming year. Heulat, who was formerly in the piano business in this city, but who now lives- at Yakima, arrived last night and spent the morning in the city. He went out to Wallowa county on the noon train In the Interests of a Boise piano house. Mrs. W. F. Ghcrmely and daughter Beulah, who have been visiting Mrs. Ghormely's daughter, Mrs. C. E. Coch ran, left this morning for Umatilla, where they will Join their husband and father. Mr. Ghormely Is the Prin cipal of the school at Umatilla. This is a snap, address "A" Observer (S-l-4t) SEATTLE, Sept 1. (Special) Smith Family Day on Thursday will , be a unique feature of the week's en tertainment at the Alaska-Yukon-Pa-clflc exposition. Smiths from all parts of the state will gather for the day. Prizes will be offered for the oldest Smith, the youngest Smith, and so on through the whole list of unusual members of the Smith family. Beginning with Thursday and con tinuing until September 9, the. most elaborate fireworks spectacle yet at tempted at the exposition will be pre sented. The scene represents the destruction of the City of Mexico. The effects will all be worked out In fire works, showing the burning and ruin of the Mexican capital. ' Another feature of the Thursday en tertainment at the fair will be Oka nogan Day. A large number of peo ple from that county are already at the fair and they will be joined by an excursion party which is expected to arrive Wednesday. The Okanogan county booth will be fitted up for tne reception of the visitors and fruit will be given away free to all comers. The Wenatchee celebration on Fri day will be the chief attraction of the day. Two car loads of Wenatchee fruit, including a bountiful supply of big red apples, will be distributed from the Chelan county booth In the Agriculture building. The Wenatchee Chamber of Commerce estimates that the attendance on that day from the county will reach "two thousand. Call For Bids.
