General Passenger Agent, Portland, Ore MAIL SERVICE FAILS TO SATISfY SMALL OfflCES Arrangement of mall conveyance on the O. R & N. Is not meeting with satisfaction since the new trains were put on and It is quite possible, in fact, likely, that there will soon be a change as small stations and postoffices are slighted by the new arrangement Four fast trains carry mall now, and few stops are made, necessitating running graps and ?f ten times delay in getting mall to the stations. The Kail Trains Nek. The present mail trains, which car ry mail to La Grande are Nos. 5, ar riving at 10:10 p. m.;'6, arriving 4:33 a. m.; 8, arriving 8:30 p. m.; and 11 at 5:25 a. m. The odd numbers go west and even numbers east The Proposed Tralas. : It Is proposed that two trains be added to the mall service, or two local trains, and two fast trains ta ken off. Numbers 9 and 10, the first arriving here at 8 p. m., and the lat ter at 7:40 a. m., are the ones most likely to get the local mall business. The Express Trains. All trains except Nos. 9 and 10 car ry express. OBJECT TO PUBLIC WEDDINGS REV. UPTON H. (To the Editor of the La Grande Evening Observer), . Dear Sir: Allow me through your columns to express the fervent hope that the fair committee will reconsider its decis ion to having a marriage ceremony performed on the grounds as a star attraction, for such a proceeding pro fanes one of. the snorodest rites of humanity. "Holy matrimony "is an honorable estate instituted of God in the time of man's Innocency;" and for those who profess and call themselves Chri3 tians, it further signifies "the mys tical union betwixt Christ and his church, which holy estate Christ adorned and beautified with IHj pres ence and first miracle that he wrought in Cana of Galilee, and is commend ed of Saint Paul to be hono able among all men, and therefore Is not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, ,. discreetly, advisedly, soberly, and in the fear of God." (Marriage service, book of common prayer.) It should be remembered in this conentclon that the principal sanc tion back of true marriage Is not that of the state, but God's. The state can legalize unions which may or may not be marriages according to the ccLnection that the primal sine- this la rightly understood it will be seen that It is as incongruous to say the least, to perform a marriage cere mony In order to draw a crowd or amuse it at a fair as it would be to celebrate the Holy Communion un der such conditions. I will not weary your readers with a longer exposition of the subject, but will conclude with respectfully urg ing the committee not to shock the devcut Christian sentiment of the com munity by thus degrading the wedding ring to the level of the circus ring. Bohnenkamp and Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Rinehart of Sum mervllle, returned yesterday from an automobile trip to Walla Walla, where they visited Mrs. Grady and Mrs. Hen derson. The path chosen was over the Toll Gate road and the beauti ful scenery along that'path Is beyond description. Nevertheless the ladies of the party who saw it for the first time have been loud in their praises. At one point, deep canyons harass the driver on one side, and on the other a scene presents Itself which easily repays for the efforts to get to the crest. The Cricket Flat and Looking Glass countries are easily visible from there. Excepting for a few miles near Summerville, the party reports, the road Is excellent, and with a little effort an interstate . automobile high way could be established that would rank as the most scenic and Interest ing of any now in existence in the northwest Put This Stove In Your Ifiichen .
