R. & N has been conservatively es timated to be In the region of $45,000, as there are extra men employed this summer, and the slow board haB been kept clean, meaning that those for merly drawing salf salaries, are now pulling down fat checks. Regular engineers, and passenger conductors don't profit by the rush of business, but the other element, and it is by far the larger, pecuniary benefits from overabundance of traffic. It Is estimated by railroad men that 95 per cent of the approximately $45,000 paid out yesterday to emr ployes, will remain in La Grande and be in circulation within two days. Last Chance Tonight There seems to be no falling off in the attendance at the Pastime theatre, the house being filled again last night. .. ... Tonight will be the last opportunity to see "Flag of Truce", as the big sensational comedy "Man to Man" will open for a three nights run to morrow night. Bids for the construction of the two new battleships Wyoming and Arkansas, authorized at the last regular ses sion of Congress, were opened at the navy department today. Bids were submitted by several of the big navy yards, and It will likely be some time before the contracts are definitely awarded. ' The new vessels will be of the Delaware type, of 20,000 tons or more displacement.
