Eld STREAM WESlWiD SEATTLE, Aug. 5. (Special) That thousands of people from the east are buying tickets to the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific exposition, is the Mattering re port of travel that has been received by James A. Wood, director of the ex position, from L. W. Thavis, the ex position's publicity agent, whoBe head quarters are at Washington, D. C. In a letter dated July 24, Mr. Thavis says that the sales of tickets with Se attle as their destination are unprece dented. "The Pennsyjvania office sold alone more than 800 Seattle tickets up to July 15," said Mr. Thavis, "and other lines report sales of 928 tickets be tween them for the same period. Judging from dally reports from prospective visitors at the exposition this number will be more than doubl ed before October 16th." "Reports from Philadelphia, Balti more, New York and other points in the east as well as several in the southern states indicate an unusual travel to the Pacific coast this sum mer. "People generally are always more interested in successful expositions, and naturally the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific exposition is receiving extraor dinary mention in all quarters. Thete is nothing like success and I must again congratulate you on "The best Exposition ever held." The registera In the New York and Michigan club buildings show an as tonishing number of eastern visitors. The change In the personnel of the crowds from local to general has been especially noticeable in the past month. OH on Streets. THE DALLES. Aug. 5. The most important matter taken up by the city council last night was the propoi sition of experimenting with crude oil as a means of Improving the streets of the city. Councilman P. J. Stadelman brought the Question to the attention of the city dads and after considering the same at length, the streets and public property committee was instructed by the aldermen to purchase a car of the oil which will be used for the better ment of the thoroughfares in The Dalles. The ntreet on which the oil Is to be applied is first rolled while moist and then the oil is placed on the sur face when it Is dry. The next move Is to follow up the work with a roll er and then the thoroughfare is ready for Immediate use. The city has a sprinkler at its command that will be used for the application of the oil so no extra expense Is necessitated. A car of oil will cost approximately $200.
