Not Ready to Make Definite Announce nunt Either Wuy. Chas. A. Johns, an attorney of Ba ker City, is in La Grande today at tending to busiuess. Mr. Johns -a one of the most prominent lawyers and politicians of the state and the report is that he will seek the nomina tion for Governor of Oregon In the coming election. At present there is only one candidate announced for tlu high honors although there are several others who have heard the bee' buz zing close to their bonnets. Grant U. Dimlck, county Judge of Clackamas county has announced his intentions of becoming an active candidate. Judge Geo. H. Burnett of Salem, and Mayor Simon, of Portland, are al3o talked of as likely candidates and there are several others who are ready and willing to enter the race at the drop of the hat. Mr. John's visit from Baker here today is purely a business one and has no connection with politics what ever. He is going on to Portland tonight While Johns would not deny, today, that he is a prospective candidate, he affirmed that he was not ready to other. Fire In Seattle. The engine company's lost 1b $23,000 In patterns. The origin is unknown. ' FAVORABLE REPORT WILL HEARD TOMG'JIT. Macadam Road And PaTement Adams Atenue Is Recommended. BE on to on q Auams to city limits where county macadam road commen- 4 ces. A a When the street committee reports at tonight's council meeting on the resolution Introduced some time ago relative to the street paving, that mat ter will come up for final action by tue council, lhat it wiii nubs ioiiiin is very evident for Chairman Al An drews and his committee on street, have a report that will boost the resolution towards passage at a rapid gate. There have been some changes Blnoa the ordinance was drafted originally. Depot street Is not included in tnia improvement district and in Its stea l will come a very much needed road improvement. The report to be mad$ tonight will call for pavement, on lr-3 ten-year payment plan, from Fourth street east on Adams avenue to Spruc-3 a distance of about six blocks. Fnm there on to the city limits where thi county has commenced the construe tlon of its macadam road, the resolu tion will call for macadam. There are about bIx blocks of this sort of improvement While a great majority of propertv owners on Adams avenue are in great favor of pavement, and that pavement is the one needed feature In the city are well known facts, but that the macadam road is also needed is an other condition which exists. At pres ent farmers coming over the macadam road with loads will suddenly bump Into ruts and in the winter, into mud holes. Macadam roads up to the pave ment will reduce the bad roads of the east side of La Grande very materi ally. It is absolutely essential for tho welfare of the city's growth that pave ment policies be adopted, but it la also essential that the macadam work be done on Adams avenue. If the resolution passes, which seems very probable, three appraisers will be named from the council to ap praise the abutting property and then the advertisement for bonds will fol low. It will be a short process be fore dirt is flying on this project, if the council adopt the report on the paving resolution tonight. Final action on near beer licenses and regulations of near beer saloons Is another Important feature for tonight. Will MEET TOM I The finance committee of the fa!, oramission will meet tonight at 8 o'clock at the Commercial club rooms and transact some very important bv.s- ness. Ways and means will b devis- sl for the raising of the $3000 guar antee fund necessary to hold llw fa'r It is thought that the raising of the nor nflsflt-v Anmunt will tint ho rtifr-ntf make announcement one way or the I A11 men, bers are urged to be present at the meeting.
