county fair will be held this year at
La Grande, beginning October 4th.
and lasting one week.
The new catalogue will be out now
In a short time, the cause of the de
lay so far has been due to the effort
to get the Wallowa county people
to Join us and combine the two fairs.
Tlie new catalogue will be practic
ally the same as the old one, but with
this exception, many of the premiums
have been raised and new features
added, and also a large special list
of premiums will be offered by the
business men of La Grande.

largest fair that Union county has
ever had.

on the brakebeam and that in some
manner his foot dropped to the rail
and was severed at the ankle by the

Additional light is thrown on the
romantic marriage of Mr. Clark and
Miss Kooken here two days ago, and
mentioned as a n mor in the Observer
yesterday, by a C'jpateh to the Ore
gonian from The Dalles:
Maud Kooken, the 13-year-old Rose
burg girl who was taken from an, 0.
R. & N. train and arrested here Sat
urday, escaped last night from Sheriff
Levi Chrisman'8 home during the of
ficer's absence. Officers of surround
ing towns were notified to watch out
for her, but so far as known she has
not been apprehended.
The sheriff was called to Tygh val
ley yesterday and left his charge in
the care of his housekeeper. The gir'
was to sleep In a tent In the yard
with the housekeeper, and shortly af
ter retiring made an excuse for re
turning to the house. Becoming
alarmed at her prolonged absence; a
search was Instituted and It was dis
covered she had made good her es
cape. It is thought she boarded nn
eastbound train. The runaway fir!
had a ticket to La Grande and seamed
to be well supplied with money.

to Pendleton after an Inspection of the
banks in La Grande, and In other sec
tions of Eastern Oregon. "The tre
menduous crops, the new enterprises,
and the steady forging to the front so
noticeable everywhere, has made a
banking business of the state that is
truly remarkable," he continued. "The
banks were never better financially
than this summer. I find, and it will
be bo all year. The institutions will
have extra work, calling in reserves
to meet the demand for money. In
all my banking career 1 have not
known of better stability In banking

A deal was closed this morning
whereby the Grande Ronde Reservoir
company becomes the owner of the
1 io acres of land formerly owned by
W. W. Ayers lying In the basin of the
reservoir site.
At the beglnntng of the negotiations
Mr. Ayers asked $2800. for the land
and the reservoir people offered a
little over $2000. Mr. Ayers offered
to compromise at $2300, and this mrr
nlng the papers were signed which
made the compromise a reality.

Al. Roberts of La Grande, and one
of the best known politicians in the
state of Oregon, spent yesterday af
ternoon in Baker City. Mr. Roberts'
health Is improving since he left the
government service and It Is under
stood that lately he has been making
several deals that returned handsome
financial dividends. While in the city
he didn't discuss politics, but It Is
presumed that his political eye was
alert to any development In the con
gressional situation, at least Baker
City Herald.
