The celebration finance committee is out today gathering up the fund pledged by the business men to cover the expenses of the celebration. As they met with a liberal response Two men, 'one a resident of this city' and the other until recently a land holder within six miles of La Grande scared away a family of five last week, according to the confessions made by the parties made the victims of the alleged knocking. The family In ques tion left last evening for the west, ad mitting to a half dozen men and lodge--men who strlved to retrieve the home seekers, that their determination to leave La Grande and go farther west was due entirely to knocks aimed at La Grande and Union county by these two residents. Left In a Hurry. "- Less than two weeks ago, a family consisting of the husband, wife, two children and a father-in-law arrived from Crossin, Arkansas, and having some $1500 to invest looked about un der piloting of local real estatet men. who spared their energies In selling real estate to 'd voting their time -entirely to Bhowlng fort,h the resources of the valley, the family.relurned Impressed with the verdor.of all grow ing products of the soil. They rented a house from the La Grande Invest ment Company and ordered furniture from the Haistten store. . A small sup ply of groceries were laid by too, and the family evidently intended to re main indefinitely. Then two men put In hard knocks, the family affirms and they were anxious to be off, and last evening, boarded the west bound vetous eyes on the syBie.n of ii.e Uni ted Railways. . Theccurtiocm was crowded. Gieut throngs filled the stre.cn trying e gain admission. Hener announced this affernoon that it Is improbable tthat be will complete his address today; In this event the case will not go to the jury before tomorrow noon. NEW ROAD IN EVIDENCE IIARR1MAN PREPARES TO COMBAT . P. LINE.' train. ' Tn n half rton mnn tr Arkansas man said that he had con versed with two men from this city and they had told him that it was im possible to secure work; impossible to make money, that one of these two men had recently Bold his farm, at considerable loss as he was not ma king any money. All these assertions took weight with the homeseeker and once turned, nothing could deter his trip west. Local real .estate men, from various firms, talked with the fellow, guaranteed him work, the George Palmer Lumber company of fered him work, .local Odd Fellows strlved to convince him that their knocklngB were untrue, and used every possible means to persuade him to stay but their fruits of the knocker had taken effect. The untruthfulness of the alleged knockers statements are reflected In the fact that one in dividual who has grieved to see ihe family leave under such conditions, of fered to guarantee work, while an other actually offered him the po sition desired. The unprofitable farm ing rumor is of course absurd. The lesson to be learned from this mnn-rry to some, but serious to the c.iy at large in such a degree that It Is Inestimable, is clear, and while the city Is practically void of such b Ings It appeara that it yet crops out occasionally. Knowles, the New York In- weeks ago are being kept without exception. Money conditions in La Grande are easy. It la one thing to subscribe nearly $75,000 in stock for the Mead owbrook irrigation project and over $1000 for Fourth of July celebration all within the short space of a little more than a month, and it is another matter to collect it, but like the suc cess meeting the finance committee of tKe Fourth, the money subscribe! for the Irrigation project Is tinkling Into the coffers in a manner that reflects great credit on the city. Baker City is having the time of its life raising a paltry $10,000 In a city with consider able more population than La Grai.de. La Grande is alright and the people in it are alrightt.
