the expenses of the celebration. As
they met with a liberal response

according to the confessions made by

alleged knocking. The family In ques
tion left last evening for the west, ad
mitting to a half dozen men and lodge--men
who strlved to retrieve the home

leave La Grande and go farther west
was due entirely to knocks aimed at
La Grande and Union county by these
two residents.

versed with two men from this city
and they had told him that it was im
possible to secure work; impossible to
make money, that one of these two
men had recently Bold his farm, at
considerable loss as he was not ma
king any money. All these assertions
took weight with the homeseeker and
once turned, nothing could deter his
trip west. Local real .estate men,
from various firms, talked with the
fellow, guaranteed him work, the
George Palmer Lumber company of
fered him work, .local Odd Fellows
strlved to convince him that their
knocklngB were untrue, and used every
possible means to persuade him to
stay but their fruits of the knocker
had taken effect. The untruthfulness
of the alleged knockers statements
are reflected In the fact that one in
dividual who has grieved to see ihe
family leave under such conditions, of
fered to guarantee work, while an
other actually offered him the po
sition desired. The unprofitable farm
ing rumor is of course absurd.
The lesson to be learned from this
mnn-rry to some, but serious to
the c.iy at large in such a degree that

the city Is practically void of such b

strom, the self confessed murderer of
John Peterson, was hanged at the
state prison this morning.! He spoke
briefly on the Bcaffold in broken Ens

Nordstrom was 25 year old.x and
killed Peterson in a woods in Tilla
