Lewis Is now the only one left of the original band who felt the need of and deserve credit of the work that was done long ago. "At Liberty schoolhouse, near La Grande, Oregon.' on the third Sunday In November, 1873, a meeting was called for the purpose of organizing a Baptist church; Elder L J. In June. 1874. the church prepared a Jetter ana sent delegates to the association at Wlng ville, In Baker county. At this association Rev. "Those were pioneer days, three or four families entertain ing about thirty delegates and visi tors. But it was a glorious meeting, the Lord 1fciaig with ua ia great pow er." In June, 1SS3, the Association was held whh Liberty church, the .Metho dists giving ilie iae of their building in La Grande for the meetings. . The first pastor to whom the little church was able to pay a salary wafc the Kev. G. T. EIHb. He was called May 24, 1881. Soon afterward It was decided to lutld, and the name of the cljurch was changed to "The First Baptist Cljurch of La Grande.". The huililin committee was composed of the paator, G. T.
