Th olden wooden Baptist church
huiUiiiti ia Wing lorn down.
At a ni.va news item, the statement
of little Importance,, but to a large
number of La Graude people, some
of them the children or grandchildren
of those who had to do with the first
organization of a Baptist church In
this community, the passing of the old
building will recall many memories.
The history of the early struggles
of the Baptist church in La Grande
from which thlsstory Is taken waa
written by the last remaining char
ter member of the church. Maria J.
Lewis and H. P. Lewis. Mrs. Lewis
died some years ago, and II. P. Lewis.
Mrs. Lewis died some years ago, and
II. p. Lewis Is now the only one left
of the original band who felt the need
of and deserve credit of the work
that was done long ago.
"At Liberty schoolhouse, near La
Grande, Oregon.' on the third Sunday
In November, 1873, a meeting was
called for the purpose of organizing
a Baptist church; Elder L J. Booth,
of Cove, acting as moderator and F .
T. Dick, as -lerk pro tern.
The following brothers and sisters
were enrolled as charter members.
Rev. n. H., Lewis, Mary J. Lewis,
George Horsepool, Eliza Horsepool,
H. P. Lewis, Maria J. Lewis aud F.
T. Dick.
" On motion. Elder L J. Booth and
Rev. B. 11. Harris were lected to
draft articles of faith and the church
covenant, which were read and adop
ted." Leaving the exact language ef the
minutes,. we find that Rev. B. H. Lewis
was called ns pastor and served with
out salary. The new chnrrh was cal
led Liberty church. In June. 1874.
the church prepared a Jetter ana sent
delegates to the association at Wlng
ville, In Baker county.
At this association Rev. LewiB was
ordained, and thechurch was received
into the association.
To quote, again fpom the language
of the history. "Those were pioneer
days, three or four families entertain
ing about thirty delegates and visi
tors. But it was a glorious meeting,
the Lord 1fciaig with ua ia great pow
er." In June, 1SS3, the Association was
held whh Liberty church, the .Metho
dists giving ilie iae of their building
in La Grande for the meetings.
. The first pastor to whom the little
church was able to pay a salary wafc
the Kev. G. T. EIHb. He was called
May 24, 1881. Soon afterward It was
decided to lutld, and the name of
the cljurch was changed to "The First
Baptist Cljurch of La Grande.". The
huililin committee was composed of
the paator, G. T. Ellis, George Crain
and H. P. Lewis. The building plan
ned was to coBt $2,000, but by a
change In the plan $840. was added
to the cost. To help raise this extra
amount the pastor donated the lot,
valued at $250. and succeeded In get
ting others to double their gifts.
John Wilson bought the old build
ing some years ago, and is now hav
ing It torn down.
