SKn-MmUi'r Owe Bank l arge Sum Uud Mlniiitf Stork IlelM Ruin On Hank IWxiHwr Is ApMliitcd. Raker City, March 24. Develop ments rtjrardlng thv failure of the Stockmen te Trad.r bunk at Prairie City show that the bunJfc has accepted niihir.i f ur!llii for I'.an ami at the 'ir.ie o.' fiiliure two mining coiupaniv owed the limtitutlon heavily. There are alo Indications that stockholders of the bank were permitted to borrow funds from the lntltuton, and It la Intimated that one director owes the bank In the neighborhood of $7000. The climax of the Institution's ca reer came through a ault filed agalnut It by the Merchant's National Bank of Portland. That bank was correspond ent of the Prairie City Institution. Since the panic of 1907 when Port land banks were batting their eyes and several of them failed to stem the tide, thing have been going hard with the Stockmen & Traders' bank at Prairie City. Confidence seemed to lessen In It and enemies of Interested men, It Is alleged, took occasion to organize runs on the little bank. Taxes Cut Some Figure. Peculiar as It may, seem there a possibility that payment of Grant county taxes had something to do with the bank's closing. The tax collector deposits public funds in a bank at Canyon City. Lately the time tins be-n on for paying taxes and property own ers around Prairie City gave check in payment. These checks took money out of the Stockmen & Traders' bank and the tax collector deposited It In a Canyon City bank. With the weak ened condition exlntlng from other points of attack and failure to realize on mining loans, augmented by direc tors and stockholders of the bank be ing unable to meet their papt-r, the whole thing became a hopeless wreck and the doors closed in all probability never to open,' regardless of the op timistic report that was sent out from Prairie City a few days ago. - Receiver In ApHliile1. J. R. Poland arrived In Baker City thin morning' on his way home from Portland, where he had been on busi ness connected with the fulled bunk, lie wan appointed by the court as re ceiver and will wind tip the bank's business as speedily ns possible. Will Pay Out. To n reporter for the linker lerald Mr. Poland said ns he boarded a Stimpter Valley train this morning: As receiver of the bank I am not at liberty to make utatetnents of any kind, nor to give out any explanations other than the bank, In my judgment, will pay dollar for dollar to all depos itors and stockholders. There was but $7000 call deposits and J3000 on time certificates when the bank closed. The nubilities are in the neighborhood of $30,000, while assets range far above that including all paper, some of which mav be slow to reniw nn The bank was solvent bul various things combined against It and there was nothing to do but close up shop." 'wife and daughter, who have resided in La Grande all winter, have moved out on their farm home again, bo Mr. McCIure may re sume his spring work. A fair-sized crowd assembled both Sunday afternoon and evening,, at the school house, to hear Rev. H. A. Ketehum preach. After church Sun day school was organised, to be con ducted every Sunday morning at 10 o'clock. The following officers were elected: Superintendent, Miss Gertrude Stoker; assistant superintendent. Mrs. Earl Jones; secretary. Miss Lulu Counsell; treasurer. Mis Eua Peebler; organ ist, Mrs. Henry Peebler; teacher of senior . class, Mrs. Henry Peebler; teacher of Intermediate class, . Mrs. Lucy Graham; teacher of primary class, Mrs. Adolph Peebler. Let all come and take an active part and make the Sunday school a better school than It ever before has been. ECZEMA A GERM DISEASE. Myriads of Mlcrocodc Animals Infest the Skin of the Sufferer. When the'skln of an eczema sufferer Itches and burns In untold agony, do you know what is going on within the pores of that skin? Myriads of microscopic animals are gnawing at the flesh, breaking down the fine cells and causing festers, thick scales and that terrible Itch. The germs multiply faster than nature can throw them off. Now, there .is only one way to get rid of these germs they must be killed In their lodging places. Dosing the stomach or trying to cure the blood will-not, of course, kill the germs, and that Is why all the blood remedies fail in eczema; that Is also why salves which do not penetrate can do no per manent good. . Ordinary oil of wintergreen proper ly compounded in liquid form will pen etrate the pores of the skin and kill the ecxema germs. If properly mixed with thymol, glycerine and other in gredients (as in D. D. D. Prescrip tion) this wash will build up the tis sue of the skin and promote its healthy growth, giving nature a chance, while killing the germs faster than they can multiply. The Newlln Drug Co., of this city, recommends D. D. D. Pre scription, also D. D. D. Soap. f The Cough Syrup that w rids the svstem of a cold by acting as a cathartic on the bowels is LAXATIVE COUGH SYRUP Bee i the original laxative coogh syrup, contains no opiates gently moves th bowels, carrying the cold off through th natural channels.
