Emery and her mother have broken
up their home here and today are on
their way to Tacoma, where, II plans
succeed. Miss Emery will wed Gunjlro
Aokl, formerly a dishwasher in the
Emery home. ..
The departure of the Emerys was
witnessed by the whole town, although
the couple are shunned by neighbors,
while the girl and mother packed
their trunks. Hundreds hooted and
Jeered them when they started for the
railroad station. At the depot they
were targets for decayed flowers and
rice, and they were nearly mobbed In
the waiting room. They were saved
from actual violence by a strong body
guard of reporters.
"Contemptible cads," was the com
ment of Miss Emery. It Is apparent
the couple lias little money and every
thing In the home Is said to have been
converted into money for the trip.
Miss Emery visited the newspaper of
fices upon her arrival In San Tanclsco,
to get her side of the story printed.

Knowing that you always deslro the
facts In every case, I .wish to correct
part of your account of ; the Union
council proceedings. The council did
not repeal any ordinance lit Its ad
journed meeting on Tuesday 'night.
Regarding the petition will say that
It was Instigated by the whisky ele
ment that , has ruled Union for years,
and those that are opposed to the mu
nicipal lighting plant that the city is
figuring on Installing The prime ob
ject of the petition is to defeat the clec-
trlct light plant.
The present council and myself were
elected on the reform ticket, which Is
the first tinie an entire reform ticket
has been In control; therefore, as the
town has been run heretofore by the
whisky and lawless element, the re
form people are certainly entitled to

ing to he disappointed. The' present
council and mayor have done nothing
that is wrong, but everything so far as
possible that Is rlht, and entirely
backed by the state law. Therefore,
we have nothing to rescind and have

resign, and we are not going to resign,
but will enforce the laws for the bet

La Grande's police know nothing of
the identity of the girl referred to in
the above dispatch. To their knowl
edge no girl has left here of late
against the wishes of her parentsand
they aver that If such is the case,

At a meeting of 'the student body of
the high school held yesterday a com
mtttee was appointed to bring the sub
ject of a new high school before th
public, anJ the following communica
tion was presented to The Observer
for publication today: '
With only a few of La Grande pu
pils Is an education at some higher
tchool possible. ' Since we are com
pelled to look to this school to. fit us
for our life work, ought it not to be
the best than can be made? We stu
dents think that we have a right to
ask for better opportunities than those
offored by the building which we no
occupy. What is the difference which
a new high school building would make
In the ; taxes barely a mill when
compared with the difference It would
make In the lives of many boys and
girls? '. .
Our present High school facilities
are far beneath those of any town of
equal population in the northwest.
In fact, we have at present no school

ing called High school at present Is
ot, nor never was Intended for a High

The only difference between the so-
called High school building and the
