Umpire. Clark's Statement. - There Is not a shade of . doubt In my mind, but what the on- side kick taken by Pendleton as 4 a touchdown, was in reality a - touchback, and should have - counted for nothing.. The rules fully cover the exact Issue at stake. C. C. Clark, official um- plre in the game. Wall's Statement. My watch and the stop watch carried by Sullivan, coincided at 4 the beginning of the game, yet In 4 less than 25 minutes' time, his 4 was 30 seconds behind mine. In .4 less than a minute after thnt 4 again, It was a minute behind 4 time. This last tampering took 4 place under my very eyes. No 4 manner of argument can con- 4 vince me that I was In error. 4 The alleged touchdown was a 4 touchback. If 1 can read Kns- 4 lish. J. F. Wall, official time- 4 keeper. 4 The La Grande football team suf fered defeat at the hands of a stronger eleven at the Pendleton gridiron yes- LAWRENXE O. MURRAY. Comptroller of the Currency. 4, terday afternoon by a score that never 'J. has been, nor never will be accurately 444444444444 19 toO is manifestly wrong, and the claims of the local people stand for aught. La Grande was defeated. That fact may as weii be understood at the oujtset for Its team was much weaker than when It played here on Christ mas day and the team which It played yesterday, on the contrary, was much stronger. The wonder Is that the al leged score of 19 to 0 Is not an actual fact. In the line Fred Grout, a high school youth, was playing center; Qoodall played his first game of foot ball at guard, and was displaced by Stltt and Caylor, neither of whom have had .experience. Pendleton nuncliireil the center of the lino quite consistent ly at time. The back field was handi capped, and above all, the proper vim was lacking In the La Grande team. Every one seemed to be off center. On the contrary, Pendleton's men played like demons, though never for an in stant resorting to dirty playing.' Ttao conduct of the players was as gentle manly as when they were In La Grande. La Grande resorted to punt ing tactics, attempting to put the ball In play by scrimmage but twice and trying but ono forward pass. Chllders' boot was called Into service i to punt out of danger at every oppor tunity. The game lacked the sensa tional plays ' that characterized the contwt here, and all In all, was any thing but spectacular except in one sense.' A "Rapid" ralrulntr. Mark Moorhouse Is undoubtedly the fastest counting referee known to c.v-tern Oregon. It Is not wise at this time to go Into the details of his work, but In a few Instances may suf fice to prove the prejudiced decisions of Mr.! Moorhouse as a referee on his o'clock p. m., at the office of La homo iTound. When Pendleton once Granile Investment company, for the made an uncompleted forward pas of purpose of electing a Board of Di rectors and conducting such other business as may properly come before the stockholders. J. K. WRIGHT, Secretary La Grande Irrigation Co. 2I-4-11-1S-2S When Reynolds signaled for a fair catch and was interfered with by a Pendleton man, no penalty was af flicted; later, when the conditions were reversed, La Grande was duly punished. Section 8, rule 6, covers the Instances where an onslde kick had roled over La Grande's goal line and beyond the projection of the side line, to be downed there by a Pendleton man. It was without the question of a doubt a touchback, yet Moorhouse persisted In calling It a touchdown. When .T. V: WntV mm MmwtfooTio called time, Pendleton again lined up and kicked a field goal.'. Assistant Timekeeper Sullivan had without a doubt tampered with his watch. This decision was one of the rankest on the field. There were numerous such de cisions. , Badly stiffened but glad that they had broken even on games with their Pendleton rivals, the team returned to La Grande last evening.
