The last day of the year of 1908 passed out quietly, characteristic of the entire year. Tills year has been one of fear'and apprehension, largel uperflclnl and not warranted by the conditions. In the far east we heard of panics, money depression which In degree affected us on thin coast, but after all, as we review the pant 12 months we find that the great north west has forged ahead with wonderful rapidity, absorbing thousands upon thousands of new home builders, the general effect of which hag made It self manifest In every nook and corner of our state. Every business man en ters upon the new year wtth courage And hope for even still better financial conditions. Grande Ronde valley Is no exception by any means. We are already assured of our usual grain crop, our thousands of acres of fall grain was never more promising. Many new fruit orchards will come In to bearing next fall, which will In crease the annual volume of business. A cannery will undoubtedly be the re- lines, The lumber markets are grow ing better rapidly. Stock will certainly te no lower than at present, with ever; Indication that the price will be hlnher. With all our great diversified InUresU there I not an Industry but enters the new year with better prospects than 12 months ago, ' Many are wondering If the year"! "Jl'J? There died this morning at the' res idence of Rev. J. D. Oillilnn an old and trusted resident of La Grande, 8. Flower. He was quiet and very un obtrusive, even to reticence; never was often seen In company, and It Is most likely possible there are scores of peo ple In the city who never knew of his hermit-like and benevolent life. He lived literally for others. Rom a slj'um, ne continued tin tne lasi iew days of his life in nightly expeditions, rarely falling In his often difficult quests. None knew how he did It, for he shunned tho attention, cotnpan nnd advice of his best friends. His Inner history and the skill of his mul titude of triumphs will never be writ ten. It cna be snld of him "Ho made the world better." This Is not true of others. S. Flower was horn In 'Sal: Lake City, lived a while in Idaho, and came with Ills life-long friends nni. benefactors to La Grande years ugo Tho funeral was held this morning and was private, fitting his unostenta tious life. His real name was Sun flower, Mr. Oilman's old-gold cat. New I'ontnl Rate. Washington, Dec. 31.
