These poles con.e from the Clark and Berry property east of Cove, and are the best that can be secured for this purpose. Men are now at work cutting and peeling the timber and It Is expected that load ing can begin by Saturday. This Is the second car of Cove flr( poles to be used on the power line. Many A ppta Crops Sold. . It Is reported that all the apples of this vicinity are sold, evceptlng the crop of B. F. Bell, A. Comstock and those belonging to Karl Stackland. Packers are busy at the Stackland packing house In thla city, - but the packing Is principally for local storage Mr. Stackland expects to ship' only two or three cars of Kings and some other of the earlier varieties In the near future. It.' is estimated that Cove's crop of late apples will ., fill over 60 cars. MIks Lorcwt to Pendleton. Miss Lulu Lorens, well known in newspaper circles of eastern Oregon left Tuesday for Pendleton, where she will take a position on ono of the pa pers for a short time. Her home is In Cove. Shipping Potatoes From Cove. Several carloads of potatoes are be ing shipped from Cove this week. J M. Duffy and "William Ogden are load- Ing three cars today, two for Moscow, Idaho, and one for Pullman, Wash. George Hohnes and others are shlp- jlngi and despite the reecnt frost which caused a noticeable shortage of the crop In this vicinity, It Is reported that there will be about 15 cars of potatoes leaving Cove during the present sea son. ' ' : .". '. RTJMOR A CANARD. ; Banker Wright of L'nion, Not Interetit- ed In New Charter. ' The rumor has beeft current In La Grande for several days that Banker W. T. Wright of Union, hadmade ap plication for a bank charter to do bus iness in this city. Owing to the fact that it was well known that within the last two years he had under considera tion the purchase of the Farmers & Traders' National bank, the rumor was given some credence. Mr. Wright, while in the city yesterday, stated that he had not considered the matter and had not applied for a charter.' In reference to his former at tempt to get a bank In this city, "Mr. he had practically concluded the ne. gotlatlons for the purchase of the Farmers & Traders National bank and when he came over to close the mat ter Mr. Scrlber remarked, "You un derstand, Mr. Wright, that I am to con- tinue as manager for one year." , ; Mr. Wright stated that he did not so understand that such were the condi tions, and declared the deal off im mediately. , At that time he did not vnderstand why such si condition would be Imposed or expected, but In view of recent developments It la now easily explained.
