David Eeoles la back from his trip to the Interior of Harney county, where, as told In The Observer several days ago, he went with F. S. Bram well of La Grande, to make prelimin ary Inspection of the proposed exten sion of the Sumpter Valley road. : The following from the Baker Herald gives Information as to the outcome of the trip: : ' v ; Returning frrim Harney' county yes terday David fcccles, owner of the Sumpter Valley railroad and a large stockholder In the Oregon Lumber company, left for his home In Ogden. Joseph West, Joseph Barton and F. S. Bramwell constituted the other mem bers "of the Eccles party.' When asked today' what was the outlook for extending the Sumpter Valley Into the Harney country, one of the party said tliat such a thing Is possible, but It Is hardly anticipated at a very early date. Thev visited the fair at Burn and were all pleased with the displays, for It is known that this was considered - 4 rather a poor crop year ' for the In terior country. The fair's attendance was .reasonably large considering ev erything this year. The party exper ienced .a couple of snowstorms on the journey which added Interest to .the occasion. "There will necessarily have to be some engineering problems solved If the Sumpter Valley road Is ever ex tended to Burns, said one of the men who had returned from there. ' "At present the highest mountain the road encounters Is a grade of 1000 feet, and In extending the line It Is found that over one , mountain range t will he necessary to climb 1800 and descend 1800 feet Into the valley. It Is no small matter to build a line Into the great Harney country. We know that there Is a great region ' there needing transportation, but It Is going to take the combined efforts of all who will be Interested to build a road there." Apple Tioxes.
