Pittsburg was - eliminated from the National league pennant race, when It waft defeated yesterday by Chicago in a 5 to 2 game witnessed by 30,247 people the larg est crowd that ever attended a base ball game In the history of this city. The game was the final one of the season for Chicago and IPttsburg. The game decided which of the two teams would enter the final race. New York plays three more games, all with Boston. If she wins all, New York 'will be even with Chicago's per centage, which Is today .641. Pitts burg has .636 and New York .633. The decision of the board of direc tors In tho New. The Chicago Amer icans defeated Detroit, 3 to 1,' In the opening game of the final series, Sun day, making it Just possible for the local team to win the pennant. To do this Chicago must win the two re maining games with Detroit, while Cleveland loses one with St. Louis. On account of the Cleveland-St. Xiouls tie today, the teams will have three games to play. Salt Lake City, Utah, Oct. 8.- Utah's annual exhibition of agricultural, live stock and horticultural products was opened today and promises to be the most successful state fair ever held between the Rocky mountains and the coast. The display of fruits is espe cially notable, Utah having produced a bumper crop of all kinds of fruits this year. Forest fires are raging on every side and the air Is heavy with smoke. So much range has been burned over that it Is feared sheep will suffer for want of feed. Only by great care and much work serious loss to life and property has been averted. Ranchers in the Rogue River dis trict, and between there and Port Ox ford are suffering most. Many of the homesteads are burned. Saturday a school house in Squaw valley, recently erected, was burned to the ground. FIRE ON 'FRISCO WHARF. A fire which threatened the destruction of the Beale street wharf and adjacent ship ping valued at 3500,000, was started early this morning In the coal .bunk ers of the Pacific Coal compdny where many tons of fuel are burning. The terrific heat Is preventing the firemen from approaching. After five hours of-flghtlng the fire was brought under control. Four thousand tons of coal were consumed. The blaze destroyed a part of the company's offices and warehouses. The estimated loss Is between $60,000 and $100,000. Several firemen were overcome by fumes from the burning coal. Mr. and Mrs. W. Determined to lynch Edward Martin, a negro, sen tenced to life Imprisonment today fur assaulting beautiful Edith Ilalston, a mob of 100 led by W. 8. Lvhell, the girl's sweetheart, attacked a cordon of police guarding the prisoner in Judge Austin's court. P. R. Hwclgcrt. one of the mob, was struck on the head with a, policeman's club. He was taken to the honpitnl. After being held to the superior court, the negro walked to the door, where Debell In a tremendous rage, flung himself upon Martin and at tempted to drng him from the police. This was the signal for the attempt at lynching. , The police fought the 100 man hand to hand, while Martin was taken through a rear door. He whs quickly arraigned In Judge Curtis Wil bur' court, where he pleaded guilty and waa sentenced to llfa Imprisonment. R. & N., one murder cuse and the now famous Morrison estate es cheat ense, aside ' from several other cases of considerable Importance, will have been cleaned from the docket. The coming term Is a remarkable one ayhd will be replete' with Interest throughout. Then, also, there Is an other feature which Is new and that la, what the grand Jury will do. The result of the Jury's deliberation was to return a not true bill, and the de fendant has therefor been reelased, and his case dismissed. , . Eight hun dred thousand acres, divided Into quar ter section farms, will be disposed of by this lottery. The fire was started with oil-soaked paper In several different places. Most of those killed Jumped from windows, three fell from the roaring stairway without the slightest chance of es cape.
