Chicago, Oct. 6. Pittsburg was
- eliminated from the National league
pennant race, when It waft defeated
yesterday by Chicago in a 5 to 2 game
witnessed by 30,247 people the larg
est crowd that ever attended a base
ball game In the history of this city.
The game was the final one of the
season for Chicago and IPttsburg. The
game decided which of the two teams
would enter the final race.
New York plays three more games,
all with Boston. If she wins all, New
York 'will be even with Chicago's per
centage, which Is today .641. Pitts
burg has .636 and New York .633.
The decision of the board of direc
tors In tho New. York-Chicago dis
puted game In New York, will, make

Chicago American Have Chuiw,
Chicago, Oct. 5. The Chicago Amer
icans defeated Detroit, 3 to 1,' In the
opening game of the final series, Sun
day, making it Just possible for the
local team to win the pennant. To do
this Chicago must win the two re
maining games with Detroit, while
Cleveland loses one with St. Louis.
On account of the Cleveland-St.
Xiouls tie today, the teams will have
three games to play. By winning one
of them, Cleveland will get the pen
nant, provided Detroit loses one to
Chk'ago.
Director's Meeting Delayed.
Cincinnati, Oct. 5. A meeting to
consider the momentous question that
may give the season's pennant to
cither Chlcugo or New York by the
directors 'of the National league,
went Into session today. Umpires
O'Day and Emslle, who offllcated at
the disputed game, were present. '
The absence of President Bush of
the New York team, precluded a de
cision this morning.

annual exhibition of agricultural, live
stock and horticultural products was
opened today and promises to be the
most successful state fair ever held
between the Rocky mountains and the
coast. The display of fruits is espe
cially notable, Utah having produced
a bumper crop of all kinds of fruits

also the best at any state fair this year
and has attracted the , attention of

Gold Beach, Ore., Oct. 6. Forest
fires are raging on every side and the
air Is heavy with smoke. So much
range has been burned over that it Is
feared sheep will suffer for want of
feed. Only by great care and much
work serious loss to life and property
has been averted.
Ranchers in the Rogue River dis
trict, and between there and Port Ox
ford are suffering most. Many of the
homesteads are burned.
Saturday a school house in Squaw
valley, recently erected, was burned
to the ground.

bustion. San Francisco, Oct. 6. A fire which
threatened the destruction of the
Beale street wharf and adjacent ship
ping valued at 3500,000, was started
early this morning In the coal .bunk
ers of the Pacific Coal compdny where
many tons of fuel are burning. The
terrific heat Is preventing the firemen
from approaching.
After five hours of-flghtlng the fire
was brought under control. Four
thousand tons of coal were consumed.
The blaze destroyed a part of the
company's offices and warehouses.
The estimated loss Is between $60,000
and $100,000. Several firemen were
overcome by fumes from the burning
coal.

to lynch Edward Martin, a negro, sen
tenced to life Imprisonment today fur
assaulting beautiful Edith Ilalston, a
mob of 100 led by W. 8. Lvhell, the
girl's sweetheart, attacked a cordon of
police guarding the prisoner in Judge
Austin's court.
P. R. Hwclgcrt. one of the mob, was
struck on the head with a, policeman's
club. He was taken to the honpitnl.
After being held to the superior
court, the negro walked to the door,
where Debell In a tremendous rage,
flung himself upon Martin and at
tempted to drng him from the police.
This was the signal for the attempt at
lynching. , The police fought the 100
man hand to hand, while Martin was
taken through a rear door. He whs
quickly arraigned In Judge Curtis Wil
bur' court, where he pleaded guilty
and waa sentenced to llfa Imprisonment.

That august body, the circuit court,
convened this morning at 10 o'clock,
to conduct the October term of court,
and before Its calendnr Is exhausted,
several heavy damage suits against
the O. R. & N., one murder cuse and
the now famous Morrison estate es
cheat ense, aside ' from several other
cases of considerable Importance, will
have been cleaned from the docket.
The coming term Is a remarkable
one ayhd will be replete' with Interest
throughout. Then, also, there Is an
other feature which Is new and that

true bills will be reported remain to

Though only '' empaneled this
morning,' the grand jury has already
turned out one decision.. It was that
of W. T. Davis of North Powder,
charged with beating his wife. The
result of the Jury's deliberation was
to return a not true bill, and the de
fendant has therefor been reelased,
and his case dismissed. , .

pected to be one of the greatest pub
lic land lotteries ever conducted by
Uncle Sam had its Inaugural today,
when the land offices here and at
other towns In the vicinity were open
ed for the registration of the thous
ands of home-seekers eager to take a
chance on securing a home in the Rose
bud Indian reservation. Eight hun
dred thousand acres, divided Into quar
ter section farms, will be disposed of
by this lottery. It Is expected thatjnot
less than 100,000 persons, arid prob
ably more, will register between today
and October 17 In the hope that their
names will be drawn frum the wheel
of fortune at the .urnvvtng beginning

for this drawing must go to the towns
of Chamberlain, Dallas, Gregory or
Presho, in South Dakota, or to O'Neill
or Valentine, In Nebraska, between to

applications for registration must be

south line of the state of Smith Dakota
and adjoin the lands In Gregory coun

Gregory counry lands, four years ago,

fire fiend who started a fire In a stair- ,
way so as to cut off all means of exit,
eleven persons burned to death, sev
eral fatally Injured and six seriously
today In an East Side tenement.
The fire was started with oil-soaked
paper In several different places. Most
of those killed Jumped from windows,
three fell from the roaring stairway
without the slightest chance of es
cape. Ten bableg were saved by fire
men, who threw them froiri windows
like balls. Firemen below caught

a hallway burned beyond recognition.
