John Collier, of the People's store, who has been oil an extended visit east, is expected to arrive home this evening. Mrs. P. C Bramwell and little child, who havo both been critically ill, are much improved today. They suffered with tonsolitis. '-'. Mrs. Shaw, who has been spending the week with her parents, . William, Frank and Manuel Pedro and C. A. Johnson, all of Pendleton, attended the isolated tract sales at the United States land office this morn ing. All four procured tracts at the regular prices. ' , Prof. Manuel , Snider and children returned' today from North Powder, where they have been visiting friends. Frank Kllpatrlck went to Portland today to transact business matters. He will return in a few days' ' J. Teutscher, jr., traveling agent'for the Boys' & Girls' Aid society of Ore gon, situated at Portland, arrived last evening from' Huntington, and after looking to business matters here this morning, went on to his headquarters. Verne Hendricks left last evening for Syracuse, X. Y., from where he goes to Mnntlus, to enter St. John's Military academy. He expects to be Kone about two years. La Grande loses one of her adepts In musical cir cles by the departure of Mr. Hen dricks, but his many friends here are delighted ut Ills splendid opportunities to follow his chosen profession, thnt of surgery. Tonight the city council is to meet. In fact, It Is simply a continuation of the meeting last week. Among the things to receive consideration is the final reading of the , proposed new charter, and if it passes, probably the necessary arrangements for the call ing of a special election will be made. Another matter of public Import ance will be the report of the special committee on street pavements, con sisting of Councllmen Andrews, Curtis and Krelger. Mr. Andrews is very en thusiastic in "having the city proceed under what Is termed the Bancroft law which provides for cities to form dis tricts and for these districts to Issue bonds payablo in 10 annual payments of one-tenth the cost of the payment. Mr. Andrews states that Pendleton paved 20 or more of, its blocks under this law,- and that the cost averaged $28 per abutting SO foot lot. Mr. Andrews will favor to start wlrh the paving of four blocks; on Adams ave nue, from the Foley house to Green wood street, and two blocks on Depot street,: form the railroad grounds to Its Intersection with Fourth street. '. These bonds draw 6 per cent inter est and the first payment is due one year after the assessment oh the prop erty Is made. The bond9 are drawn in amounts not exceeding J500, and can be retired at any time after the first year. ; The great hlstorlral pageant, "The Discoverers," commemorating the dis covery of New France (Canada), de picting historical scenes in Canada during the last 300 years. The Rastime also announces for to morrow the : pictures of the "Gre'it Olympic Games' Just concluded lu London, including the' famous Mara thon race won ' by HayesP of America." The' Sherwood. Business at the Sherwood this week testifies to the pleasing power of the program. Each evening . the ; capacity of the theater has been taxed. The program is sure to please, It wasse lected with that end In view. It Is bright, clean and interesting. The songs are really better than the aver age selections and the 'coolr effects are beautiful. At the Sherwood there Is not "a moment's wait and never a drag. There Is something doing every second. The ushers see that every one has a seat Just as soon as there is a vacant chair and gentlemen, accom panied by their ladles attend, or la dies come together, special care is ex ercised to enable them to get seats to- 1 Thj.. " ' i t Social Function at Island City, ' One of the leading events In Island City's society circles was a function given last evening to the "500" club by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kiddle, in honor of Mrs. Qulnlan of Kansas City, who Is a guest at the Kiddle home. The members of the "500" club and their husbands, were the guests and the transportation means brtwepn here nnd Island City were automobiles. The t affair was highly enjoyable. The trip Kolns ard coming was pleasant, but even tlint delightful feature lost out In comparison to the function Itself. Mrs. M. n. Donohue won the first prize at "500." ' LIQUOR LAW IS DODGED At n meeting of those InterosU-d In the Pioneer flouring mill company, the directors of the company decided yesterday evening to rebuild on the old site at Island 'lty. The warehouse abutting the mill before the Island City conflagration Is now to bo bulit. Peter Posquet. the contractor who built the burned mill rn! who has been In California, having arrived In the cliy yesterday to commence construc tion of the warehouse. The structure Is to be 120x60 feet, and Is to bo lo cated about 100 feet east of the orig inal warehouse site. Mr. Bosquet will rush the construction of this building until It stands complete. Though there are details pertaining to the mill's rebuilding that remain unsolved, It has been definitely decid ed that the structure will be rebuilt on the old lite In Island City.
