Dave Clark, the well known Cove merchant. Is over n his auta today after cherry boxes. , Ho states that crop conditions are Very- good this year. , In some fields the wheat crop Is short, but he expects the Increased price over last year will bring the total volume up to the average. ' Mr. Clark this year and has Just finished a con tract with a Portland cannery to take the cherry crop suitable) for cannery purposes on' a basis of $S0 per ton. Tfro of the largest growers contracted their crops last year, Messrs. Thomas and Stacklnnd. They are fortunate, receiving $80 per ton. '. There Is ample help to gather the crop. Oorwers are paying 4 cents pfer gallon. The apple crop at this time Is also promising, both as to yield and qual ity. Mr. Clark Is In a position 'to realize the necessity of the establishment of a large cannery In this valley. 'At the present time there are hundreds of crates of raspberries drying on the vines of Cove growers from want .of a market, and If there was a cannery the present acreage would be greatly increased. This season Mr. Clark handled about two-thirds of the strawberry crop, amounting to IS000 In all, and every grower made big money, aver aging over $3 per crate, f. o. b. Cove, and there was a market for any amount offered. The Cove, 'like the western-portion of the valley. Is not growing the amount of strawberries grown a few years ago. There Is a fine opening for strawberry culture In this valley on a large scale. MANY niPUOVEMENTS. Tliree Jjl Grande Parties Are Either Building or Improving Property.
