Imagtna a "dry" Texas n arid desert stretching frora Texarkana to El Paso and from Beaumont to the Panhandle 365,000 square miles of untrrlgated gloom, with never an oasis on all its dreary wastes a Texas given over to the po lite ministrations of the soda fountain "squirt," with the white-robed dis penser of good ."red licker," guaran teed to kill at 40 rods, banished from its confines, forever. Tet it is this staggering proposition on which the democratlo voters of Texas will vote at a state-wide pri mary tomorrow and If the question carries, as appears likely, the legisla ture must frame up a constitutional amendment In favor of state-wide pro hlblttoA to be voted on next year. And state-wide prohibition In Texas means something, since It will banish liquor from a territory 710 miles in extreme breadth and 620 miles in extreme length. ' , , Considering the matter by and large, It la small wonder that the threat of prohibition has become a BLUE MOUNTAIN HOUSE T. J. Tomorrow's primary, as the first' preliminary skirmish In the warfare, follrws a heated cam paign, which is only a foretaste of what will come if the question is put up to the legislature and the voters at large. The, state Is aroused as it has never, been be Bore and the fight will be to the knife and the knife to the hlX Although the vote at the primary Is not legally binding on the legislature, It will be in effect an Instruction to that body to pass a prohibition amend ment to the constitution for submis sion to the people at the next elec tion. It requires a two-thirds vote to pass such an amendment, but the leg islature would hardly Ignore the wish es of the people expressed at the pri mary. . Prohibition In Texas is not a social or political Issue, as in many south ern states, but purely a moral one.1 The negro problem has little. If any thing to dowlth it. Most of the ne groes of the state are In the eastern and southeastern sections. Prohibi tion sentiment Is strong in the north ern part and antl-prohlbltlon In the southern part. It has been 10 years .since a prohibition amendment , was submitted to the people by the legis lature. That was In 188S, and It was dufvated by 100,000 at the polls. H. Russell, general manager of the Wilcox Lumber company, this morning Informed The Observer re porter that their new mill on Ladd creek was now nearly completed and mat tne saws will stait early next week. This morning, when the westbound passenger train was at X the depot, many passengers were attracted by the sight of the several wagon loads of cherries being loaded Into the cars and they wanted to buy some. Mr. Carbine, who Is somewhat of a boost er himself, saw an opportunity of cre ating favorable comment toward our country, and in reply as to the price. said: "Take off your hat and I will fill It for 10c. Of course, he gave them about 25 cents worth of cher rles, but he considered It good adver tising and when two or three Merry Widow hats were passed up he held his nerve and filled them on the same basis as the others. Wood was riding on a track speeder near the steel bridge this side of Perry, he was startled to discover that he was about to come In collision with an east- bound freight train. He saw the train Just in time to jump from his little car, but not In time to either save the speeder or the load of fresh batter- lea. In fact, he only escaped being struck, by a fraction of a second. The car was wrecked and the batteries demolished. The engineer saw that he waa about to run down the speeder and attempted to bring his train to a stop, but the distance was too short. As It was, the train stopped so sud denly that Conductor W. A. Wade was nearly thrown through the caboose window and sustained several severe cuts upon the arms and shoulder. AT THE SHERWOOD. New Pk-tures Plcone Patron All New and Bright. The new motion pictures and Il lustrated songs pleased three well filled houses last evening. The num bers had all been well selected, and it would be difficult to select the feat ure number, but the Dynamite Duel would be considered the thriller, and claimed the undivided attention of the audience. The situations were dra matic, but not overdrawn, but excit ing enough to make the timid ones shudder and the cool-headed ones "sit up and take notice." The number, "The Tiresome Play," waa especially good, both as regards the comedy, and from an artlstlo point of view. Patrons are Invited to notice the splen did facial expressions exhibited In this film. It Is a strong piece of act ing and on which will please each and every one. Do not fall to sea the pictures this evening. X Burrowful Event. The lawn social given by the ladles of the Maccabees last night was a com plete success In every way. Bcores of people attended the affair during the evening and partook of the refresh ments. The lawn of Mrs. Baker's home was decorated with Japanese lanterns and bunting, and presented a bcstrtlful appearance. Land for Rent.
