If Roth Applicant Paws the Examina tions, Uio City Sub CarrlciNlilp and the Coming Vacawy In the Pcwt offlco Will Have Boon Filled Ap parently Nothing to Hinder Delivery Service Now. If the lone- male applicant for a commission as substitute mail carrlrr In the city of La Grande passes the examination held before Assistant Secretary Mary Relsland of the civil service commission this afternoon, there Is apparently nothing to hinder the Inauguration of the free mall de livery flArvto n T Q n r-r, H m A 'r. ust first Last May, when the serv ice should have been put In force, it was postponed until August I," for various reasons, one being that the "sub" carrier list was not complete. While there are other matters, such as proper repair of sidewalks, that may detain the service, It seems prob able that this Is the last month of the old system. Two Take Examination. Two applicants one a lady and the other a gentleman took the civil service examination this afternoon. The two applicants will fill the va cancies existing In the window clerk ship of the local office, and In the sub carrier list, provided, of course, that both pass. The examination was slated for this! morning, but was de layed a few hours for obvious rea sons. Miss Mary Relsland conducted the "quiz." Jail Delivery at Raker. Just before the Democrat went to press this morning the discovery was mailo thut there had been a Jail de livery and that the county was short four prisoners. Sheriff Rand was out In search of the escaped prisoners und could not be seen, but we under stand the men effected thler escape by sawing the lock off with an old case knife. Two other prisoners who were In the cells refused to leave. None of the men who have escaped are considered to be very desperate criminals, three of them being sus pected box car thieves or common ho boes and the third was brought In from Bourne for resisting an officer. Mr. Rand Is usln ga makeshift In the city hall for a Jail While the new court house is being built. At day light this morning the men had not been captured. Baker City Democrat. Rubbing It In.
