there Is apparently nothing to hinder
the Inauguration of the free mall de

various reasons, one being that the
"sub" carrier list was not complete.
While there are other matters, such
as proper repair of sidewalks, that
may detain the service, It seems prob
able that this Is the last month of the
old system.
Two Take Examination.
Two applicants one a lady and
the other a gentleman took the civil
service examination this afternoon.
The two applicants will fill the va
cancies existing In the window clerk
ship of the local office, and In the
sub carrier list, provided, of course,
that both pass. The examination was
slated for this! morning, but was de
layed a few hours for obvious rea
sons. Miss Mary Relsland conducted
the "quiz."
Jail Delivery at Raker.
Just before the Democrat went to
press this morning the discovery was
mailo thut there had been a Jail de
livery and that the county was short
four prisoners. Sheriff Rand was
out In search of the escaped prisoners
und could not be seen, but we under
stand the men effected thler escape
by sawing the lock off with an old
case knife. Two other prisoners who
were In the cells refused to leave.
None of the men who have escaped
are considered to be very desperate
criminals, three of them being sus
pected box car thieves or common ho
boes and the third was brought In
from Bourne for resisting an officer.
Mr. Rand Is usln ga makeshift In
the city hall for a Jail While the new
court house is being built. At day
light this morning the men had not
been captured. Baker City Democrat.
