We had th honor to be the first boat the fleet passed, and also the first one to sa lute the fleet. The day was perfect: the bay calm, and I cannot describe our feelings as wo saw It come through the Golden Gate, but can only say the sight was one never to be forgot ten and one we never expect to wit ness again." Rudyard Kipling has been wont to stigmatize temperance people. He Kwns not, and Is not, a total abstainer. lint he recently saw two young men get two young girls drunk and then lend them reeling down the street. That started Rudyard Kipling to thinking: "Then, recanting prevTuis opinions i became a prohibitionist. Titter Is ;t that a man should go without his beer In public places, and rnUn; I himself witrt swearing at the narrow, mtndedness of the majority; better It Is to poison the Inside with very vll. temperance drinks, and to buy lager furtively at back doors, than to brlnr temptation to the lips of young foob auch as the four I had seen. I under stand now why the ' preachers rage against drink. I have said: 'There Is no harm In It, taken moderately,' and yet my own demand for beer helped directly to send these two glrla reel ing down the dark street to God alone knows what end. If liquor is worth drinking. It Is worth taklnc a little trouble to com at such as a man will undergo to compass hi own desires. It la not good that wa should let it He before the yes of children. and I have been a fool In writing to the contrary." Cleveland Universe.
