RALSTON BCILDING, La Grande in to have a tennli club this year. A meeting of enthusiast? was held last evening and preliminary steps taken toward organizing the club. At present there are several de sirable locations which are suitable for court purposes, and a special com mittee appointed for that purpose will make the selection this week. The membership of the club num bers about 30 and .the courts are to be put In shape Immediately. Dur ing the summer months, several tour naments wilt be held. Prior to that, however, a program of single and dou ble competitive sets will be held to de termine the championship of the city. Carnegie Donates ' Additional Sum to BakerClty Library, There Is general rejoicing at the II brary because of the action taken by Andrew Carnegie In Increasing his do nation for a public library from $17, (00 to 125,000, relates the Baker City Herald. A letter has been received from Mr. Bertram, private secretary to Mr. Carnegie, stating that the In crease had been made because of the excellent showing that had been made to Mr. Carnegie of the work that It being done here. There is not a "II brary In the northwest that la In a more nourishing condition than the Baker City library and many of the libraries In larger cities do not have the circulation that Is enjoyed here. Baker City has an excellent founda tlon for building up a fine library that will rank among the best In the north west. The books have been carefully elected with a view to giving the pa trons tjie best there Is In each line of literature and Information can be se cured upon almost any subject. . The plans for the new building are now being perfected by the architects, Wayland and Fennell of Boise, who are thoroughly familiar with library building. The building will harmonize In style with the city hall and will be an attractive addition to the city. The main floor will be devoted to reading rooms, one for adults and one for children. The stock room will also be on the main floor and the public will be allowed to select their books from the shelves as at present. In the base ment there will be a lecture .room and study rooms for school pupils who may desire to converse. No talking will be allowed In the main reading rooms. A copy of (he proposed plans have been sent to Mr. Carnegie and as soon as they are approved by him they will be perfected and work on the new structure begun.
