ADDITIONAL DONATIONS.
Carnegie Donates ' Additional Sum to
BakerClty Library,
There Is general rejoicing at the II
brary because of the action taken by
Andrew Carnegie In Increasing his do
nation for a public library from $17,
(00 to 125,000, relates the Baker City
Herald. A letter has been received
from Mr. Bertram, private secretary
to Mr. Carnegie, stating that the In
crease had been made because of the
excellent showing that had been made
to Mr. Carnegie of the work that It
being done here. There is not a "II
brary In the northwest that la In a
more nourishing condition than the
Baker City library and many of the
libraries In larger cities do not have
the circulation that Is enjoyed here.
Baker City has an excellent founda
tlon for building up a fine library that
will rank among the best In the north
west. The books have been carefully
elected with a view to giving the pa
trons tjie best there Is In each line of
literature and Information can be se
cured upon almost any subject.
. The plans for the new building are
now being perfected by the architects,
Wayland and Fennell of Boise, who
are thoroughly familiar with library
building. The building will harmonize
In style with the city hall and will be
an attractive addition to the city. The
main floor will be devoted to reading
rooms, one for adults and one for
children. The stock room will also be
on the main floor and the public will
be allowed to select their books from
the shelves as at present. In the base
ment there will be a lecture .room and
study rooms for school pupils who
may desire to converse. No talking
will be allowed In the main reading
rooms. A copy of (he proposed plans
have been sent to Mr. Carnegie and as
soon as they are approved by him
they will be perfected and work on
the new structure begun.
