The forces lit the other various depart ments were diminished more or less, and as a result there Is but little ac tivity In the yards today. Thirty-six men totals the yard, round house and car repair crows for the day. 'v These one-day layoffs have been numerous the past winter. The causo, as -stated before. Is that the "engine miles" exceeds the local shop cx pensesand the last of the month, In such Instances, meuns a layoff for somebody. The past month has been an ex tremely busy one In the round house, the shops and the car repair depart ments. The shops have done some heavy repair work and the car repair gang has converted 12 Snake River ballast cars Into .flat cars for use by. the Huron work train. This Is partly responsible for the additional expense and for the layoff today.V" , . (API. PAUL GOES EASI Captain A. M. Paul, superintendent of the Aurella mine, left this morning for Salt Lake, Chicago and New York. The captain goes well armed with samples of the "rock" and assay sra' statements and an honest convic tion that eastern Oregon- offers ns good opportunities for mining Invest ment as any portion of the United States. In the past the captain has been able to Interest capital, and In each Instance 1 his . properties . have doveloped Into dividend payers, and he sees no good reason why the Aure lla should be n exception. He ex pects to be absent about six weeks. WITH ' LA GRANDE FANt The system of placing o'nthe bulle tin board of the scores o.f the Pacific league Is meeting with general favor lh this city.
