A move ment to give the Indians of the fa: West a square deal and to protec them from the rapacity of land-grah bers and politicians was launched her today In an Interstate conference c heads of Indian tribes, well know educators and philanthropists. The greatest object of the confei1 ence, which will continue throug' three days, Is to open the eyes of th Interior department and of the peopl to the utter Incapability of the Indian to compete In a commercial way wit' their white neighbors. Dr. David Starr Jordan, president of Stanfon university, la one of the leaders In tin movement. It is declared that thousands ol western Indians are now landless anc" homeless, and on the point of starva tion because of their Inability to cope with the unscrupulous whites wh have robbed them of their possessions It Is admitted that the effort to edu cate the Indians to the standards c white men's civilization, while sue cessful in some Individual Instance? has been largely a failure and tha other methods of conserving tho In tercsts of the native Americans wii have to be devised. A state convention of tho Callfornl Fruitgrowers' association was als opened here today and hns attracted a large number of delegates. The ses slon will last four days. FROM THE PRESS. Once more the name of La Grande has gone forth as aynonlmous with a live, hustling community. During the past week newspapers of the state have spoken liberally of the era which La Grande has entered Into, but few have given as much editorial space as the Portland Telegram did yesterday, heading the editorial column with It. The tribute follows: In the city of La Grande they have hit upon rather a novel method of ex ploitation, which has to do with cul tivating the good, will of the home folk. Not long ago they had a live stock show up In that metropolis of eastern Oregon, and from all accounts It was what the exuberant fellow would term a howling success. From this,' the La Grande folk took the hint, and decided to give a sort of con tinuous performance; and from all ac count It appears that tin iu Ss: 8 good one. , In other words, every fourth Satur day, or thereabouts. Thl proposition of getting well acquainted with your next door neighbors Is- i most excellent one for every town an city In the state, and especially If your next door neighbors are the tillers o the soil around about, who at firs hand are your real support. There Is nothing that will go farther for general state advancement than the cultivation of good will betweei a municipal community and the farm Ing community on which It dependf Such courtesy and entertainment, a we understand, characterizes this Lr Grande enterprise, amounts to an ex change of favor between the city mai and the country man. It assuredly has this effect, that In any publi matter concerning the section, wheth er the direct benefit be more clearl. to city or country, there will be mor unity of purpose toward Its accom pllshment i Aside from this, there Is greate joclal and business benefit from th Teatlon of conditions that will lead t :he more general visiting of farm per ile to the city.
