J. 8CROOGIN, Assistant Cashier F. J. HOLMES. Treasure. Communication. To Friends and Enemies of the 8a loon: Some one kindly has mailed me a little circular, setting forth what are liquor business. . I knew It was great, but had never an Idea It la so enor mous. Of course, this circular writer Is telling the truth, else he would not pose before the public. Here are some of the statements: Corn 86,361,975 bushels Barley 62,760,000 bushels Rye .... 5,595,000 bushels Total 104,716,975 bushels This number of bushels of grain are annually consumed by the distiller. That means turned Into poison, so that not one grain of It Is ever capable of giving one particle of strength , or health to ' man or beast. ' What a waste! Why should the liquor inter ests desire to advertise such destruc tion, amounting annually to $93,950,- 097 T Besides that, they , consume $16,358,000 worth of sugar products, hops and assorted grains, they say: waste $54,642,000 worth of labor; burn $5,000,000 worth of fuel (in these days when fuel is 'growing so scarce) J cre ate $15,000,000 worth of useless bot ties and squander enough money for other purposes to aggregate a grand total of $369,851,097 each year. What a criminal waste! A sense less, prodigal, unjustifiable waste! On the last page as an Idiotic per oration to such an eloquent and shameless confession of worse than barbaric destruction of goods worse than any war and amounting to $S,- 698,510,970 In ten years, Is made the astounding, but perfectly logical state ment that already there are many thousands who are clamoring for fooil and shelter. I should think it Is no wonder! The 36 million bushels corn would feed them quite a while, or It Would make good pork for nat ural hags for thfn, Instead of makl.i unnatural hogs Of the men and wo men who would drink the various tie coctlons. The 62 million dollars' worth of bar ley and the 39 hundred thousand dol lars worth of rye would do these starving thousands of men much m irr good In soups and bread. This circular Is addressed to "far mers, manufacturers, etc." Think o: the ignorance or the blazoned ef front- Jery of a man or a concern to publish this! Thousands starving for the ne cessities of life and the saloon Inter ests destroying so much grain! Sure!) some enemy has done this! JAMES D. G1LLILAN. La Grande, Ore., April 24, 1908. GUARDIAN SALE.
