C D. HUFFMAN, ' ,. . County Fruit Inspector, La Grande, R. F. D. No. S. IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN! How Close Tho Observer Proprietor :,' Came to Be Millionaires. ( The proprietors of - The Observer never knew until yesterday how near they came to be millionaires. . Joseph Gaston, one of the early pioneers of the state, who is making a canvass for the nomination of railroad commls sloner, told us the circumstances. .Mr, Gaston and the late Col. George B Currey, father- of Currey Bros., were soldiers togetherand soon after being mustered out Mr. Gaston stated that Col.' Currey, who had campaigned through eastern Washington, realized that in time the Immense water power where the cltyof Bpokane now stand's would be the basis of a large city, and they arranged to go and locate the land. Mr. Gaston came up and re mained as a guest of Colonel Currey a week or more, all prepared to go, but Illness prevented their departure and the trip was postponed until the following spring. But when spring came they were informed that others had located the site. Of course, had these plans matured and they would have had the tenacity to hang on to their holding, which would have been many years before that site was worth more than a $10 cayuse pony, both men would have been many times millionaires today. .
