Ivanhoe, Who Ought to Know, Stands By Ills Deputy. Feeling that It would be only fair to trie voters of Union county to know who the candidates are, and what they represent, who are now asking the nomination for Joint representative for this and Wallowa county, we In terviewed Colonel Ivanhoe, who has a personal acquaintance not only with the capdldates, but with the local con dltlons at Joseph. In a talk with him he said, among other things: "Yes, I have known Mr. Rusk for about six years. In fact, since he first came to Joseph. He has been asso ciated with me ever since, and a more conservative, competent and honest man does not practice law In either county, taking Into consideration the fact that he Is yet a young man. He is also, without posing as either a re former, or using his position as an In strument of persecution in the hands of any faction or class, absolutely fearless In the performance of his of ficial duty. He has been my deputy In that county since my taction to the office of district attorney and, un der my written Instructions, he has prosecuted any and all persons, where he had evidence sufficient to justify a does, under my directions, refuse to add a dollar to the expenses of his county, at the behest of any one, un less such evidence of guilty exists and can be had. And he does his duty I'earlessly. . Only a short time ago he as assaulted on the streets of Joseph, because he had offended some law breakers, gamblers who undertook tt hastlfe him for his presumption. Thi result of the encounter will be suffl ?lent to teach those who are dlssatls 'led with the enforcement of the law, that It is a little dangerous to try V. ;nke it out of the hide of the deputy llstrict attorney. It might not be out if place to Bay that, Rusk will not go: '.he vote of the law-breakers of th own of Joseph (his opponent wll ;et them) but he will get the vote o.' ;he law-abiding element, simply be p.U!e they have tried him, and know '.e will enforce the law if he has tr c: ap every criminal In the county. .otter natured man does not live 1: ho two counties, and; ho Is represents -Ivo also. He Is a man of family iwnn his own home, a taxpayer, aiu' cnows the needs of the two countle? lis opponent has no family, has been 'n the county about two years, and n;ld not be regarded as having been 'li re long enough to correctly repre sent and understand the legislative leeils of the district. I notice tho pa icr says he has an 'enviable record" is a law and order reformer. As 1 inderstand It, he was elected as a re .firmer, but failed to doliver the goods ;n other words, he Imposed a smal' iprlodlcal fine upon gamblers ant' similar offenders, until the people complained to Mr. llugk, who closet' hem out of business, and had to buk i in his course by . literally pnnchlnr j "hem Into obedience. All this Rusi Mil without a hypocritical 'reform roHaniatliins of pretensions. A vott j t the primaries for Mr. Rusk Is t j i "to for a taxpayer, an uncompromls-' ing republican, a capable, honest. I althful and fearless official. If the Joseph paper had been fair it would i lave said all this, as the contest l tmong frlumls, and whoever receive? 1 tie nomination should be supportec y all republicans. There Is no merit n tho statement that Mr. Eberhard was the first in the field. It is rather Against, than for him. He was told by different persons that he had not heen long enough In . the district to entitle him to a place of such respon sibility on the ticket. But he could not wait until his acquaintance would justify his ambitions, and announced himself. " v "One thing more. When I appoint ed Mr. Rusk deputy, I authorised any one to report to me any Instance In which he refused to prosecute any one for any crime, when the evidence was furnished, and If he so refused, 1 would appoint some one In his place. During the two years of his service, not ono complaint hns been filed with me. If he was not all I claim for him, he would not now be acting as ny deputy. I present him on his rec ord, and It will bear comparison wltr '.hat of any one holding public pos. Ion. Hoping nil that has been said Mil aid In the selection of the best man, I am Inclined to abide by tht holee of the party at the polls. Thel. andldate, after that dnte. Is mine." Those who are not In possession o ihe facts, and know Colonel Ivanhw ?an judge whether his estimate of tl respective fitness of these candidate. ' well founded or not. He says a e wants 1j fair show !r his f.-'.:n; , then a fair vote, and he is satisfied,' and all others should be. This office is too Important to be overlooked or, treated as of no Interest to the party, j SIEGRIST&CO. JEWELERS AND urnw ; 'PCBUCATIO.I NOTICE.
