After a decade spent In active work as the executive head of the United Mine workers of America, during which time he has attained a reputation as the na tion's foremost . labor leader, John Mitchell today stepped down and out and was succeeded by Thomas L. Lew is of Ohio. During the time that he has been president of the miners' union, that organization has grown from a small and Insignificant body tr one of the strongest labor unions In the world, with a total membership ol oou.uuo. Mitchell's retirement wat wholly voluntary, and was due to It' health. If he had wished, he mum probably have retained his posltior throughout his life time, so popular It he with the members of the union. The greatest event of Mitchell') career as a Icbor leader was the strike In the anthracite district In 1903, th most remarkable and memorable th country evor saw,. It was Inaugurated by President Mitchell, the demands be Ing an eight-hour day, higher wager and union mines. It lasted from April nutll November. when President Roosevelt appointed his famous arbitration commission and a settlement was effected, to last three years. At the expiration of the three years, the contract was renewed and now expires next year. The settle ment was considcerd favorable to the miners. Many rumors are In circulation at to Mitchells future. He has beer mentioned as a possible democratic candidate, for gofernor of Illinois, hit home being in Spring Valley, 111. I mis Been stated also that Mitchell would be asked by President Roose felt to go to Panama and make a re port on labor conditions In the cana' sone. The retired labor leader will bi one of the delegates to the conference on the conservation of the natural re sources of the country, called by Pres ident Roosevelt. John P. White of Iowa, Is the new vice-president. He has been president of the Iowa miners. W. D. Ryan of Illinois, lonir con nected wltn the state organization o! miners, Is the new secretary-treasurer Ryan Is a Mitchell man us Is White. Lewis has been spoken of us a flerc radical and some surprise has been expressed that a radical could he elected to such an Important posltior by men who have had the services for years of so conservative a leader as John Mitchell. As a mutter of fact Thomas Lewis is not a radical in tin usually accepted sense of the word He Is perhaps quicker to decide than the much-loved .Mitchell, whom In has, on numerous occasions, opposed, ami his manner of handling the vari ous questions which confront labor leaders I perhaps somewhat less con ciliatory toward opponents: he alio Is very strong willed, but his reputation I as a "'fighter" is due more to his work for what he thought right within the organization, than for any disregard of the proprieties In his relations with employers.
