The largest stream starter it First and Main. Here the sewet vas by far too small to carry the wa- er off, and a small river was mnn ormed In the street. Reaching Third street It werved to Adams avenue and ceasec1 ts wild run In the depressions about "hlnatown. filling gardens and dltchej o a depth of five feet or more. Along ts entire course the stream left a well Wined shore line. This continued al night. By Sunday morning the fierce ness had relaxed and by noon yester- lay Its plainly-visible path was the mly thing to bear out the statement that La Grande's streets hud been flooded. Cellars at the heild of Fourth street ire filled with water teday. In fact the dawntown districts suffered more or less from this source. Bridge and dams along the upper river have been threatened since late Saturday evening when a portion of the Perry dam went out releasing a large head ot water, that was soon threatening the houses built near the banks of the stream at the Palmer bridge. The rampage commenced Saturday night and all day yesterday It raged. The torrent reached a height of about seven feet above the normal. , However, lumbermen and those who are In position to know, say there Is but little trouble by high water this season. They believe the worst has ome and gone, and it appears that not a bridge is to be torn from Its moorings this season, much in the contrary to former years. Hundreds of people went to Oro Dell and the Palmer mill yesterday to witness tha torrent With terrific force the water would strike the sub stantial railroad bridge Immediately ibove the county bridge at the Pal mer mill, and in this way the county Jtructure was saved considerable tear. The newly constructed rlDraD above :he two bridges held, and the cus- ornary Inroads on the eut shore ol tne river were forestalled. The water ran over the embankment at the mardlng house Just below the brlilKe. ut never in such quantities as to threaten to flood the building located here. More tinnier lay in tho bank being washed away, thus undermining he foundations. At the Proebstel bridge the rlp- applng again saved the structure. Bridge Superintendent Campbell, who as one of the busiest men In the ounty yesterday, reports today that t no time was there any serious dan er In sight for the bridges farther iown the river.
