Charles Townsend of Joseph, was a business visitor In La Grande last evening. . C. J. Black is expected home tonight after a visit to the eastern part of Idaho. John H. Williams and E. Coutts or Hermlston, ' made application on the Hermlston irrigated tract, at the land office this morning. Mrs. J. Stiles of La Grande, Is a guest of the Golden Rule for a few days while la the city. Pendleton E. O. Division Foreman Watson returned this morning from Pendleton, where he superintended the clearing of the wreck yesterday. Harry Paulson went to Kamela this morning to remain a few days In the Interest of the Golden Rule store of this city. Miss Pearl Greer of Baker City, ar rived in La Grande today and will be employed at the Mrs. Smith millinery establishment. Miss Alta Barnes of North Powder, Is visiting at the Hunter home In Is land City. She will return with her mother, who has spent the week at Island City. Mesdames Joseph Polman and Chas. . Tullls have dissolved partnership and here after the boarding house ' on Fourth street will be conducted by Mrs. Tullls. Mrs. Polman Is planning to take a long and needed rest Dr. A. L. Richardson is home from Portland, where he assisted in the op eration performed on Mrs. E. C. Ad cook last Monday. He left his patient In fine condition, and there Is every prospect for a speedy recovery. The first practice game of basket tall on skates, was held last evening at the Noyes rink. Team No. 1 scored I points to 2 by team No. 2 By the time the date of the big game1 arrives both teams wilt be In tip-top shape. Mrs. Emma Galloway, a prominent Rebekah of McMlnnvllle, is here today attending the district convention. She has recently visited the Pendleton lodge and was In attendance at the district convention, which was held there this week. Dr. A. L. Richardson, mayor of La Grande, and N. K. West, one of the leading merchants of that place, wore in the city today, being held over for several hours on their way from Portland, on account of the wreck. Pendleton East Oregonlan. Bishop R. L. Paddock, newly ap pointed bishop of the eastern Oregon Episcopal diocese, will arrive In La Grande tomorrow night from Baker City, where he has been since his ar rival In Oregon from New York. mAtj nrnrh his first sermon In He La Grande next Sunday. J. P. Johnson, who recently pur chased the People's restaurant at Pen dleton, Ohlch Is run In connection with the Bowman hotel. Is In the city today looking after business matters. Graham and family and son, Charles, arrived this morning from BeaT Lake, Idaho. Mr. Graham, re cently purchased the James McCoy place just north of Island City. George Plummer, who committed suicide In Portland Tuesday, was well known In this city, where both Mr. and rMs. Plummer lived until about two years ago. He was a fireman on the O. R. & N. while here. Constable Alex Slater Is over from Union today, serving papers on Todd, the horse buyer to replevin a horse Mr. Todd purchased from Charles Henry of Union. There Is some ques tion about the sale and the original owner wants his animal back, or a higher price for It. How He Did It. A well known officer has a beau tiful daughter. A young ensign with no resources but his salary, fell In love with her, and asked the old gen tleman for her hand. The old gentle' man at once told him that he had hardly enough to keep him In white gloves and to burnish his brass but tons. "Well, admiral, what you say Is true, but when you married you were only a midshipman, with even a smal ler salary than mine. How did you get along?" asked the ensign, who thought he had made a good defense. But not so. The crafty old sea-dog thnuderd forth: "I lived on my father-in-law for the first 10 years, but I'll be hanged if you are going to do it." ' Sheep Have Meningitis. G. Z. Ickes, one of the pioneer Pa louse farmers, has recently lost several sheep by what Dr. Hadley, the state college veterinary surgeon calls spinal meningitis, says a Palouse Item. Mr Ickes has about 50 sheep In his flock, but upon examination It has been found that less than half a dozen are afflicted with the disease. The far mers claim this Is the first time spinal meningitis has appeared among the sheep In the Palouse country. Died at Perry. ' Mrs. Eliza Penny, beloved wife ot John Penny, died at Perry, March 2, 1908. . Mrs. Penny was bornln Wayne county, Iowa, September 15, 1856, and was united In marriage to John Penny September 1, 1889. Besides her hus band she leaves two children, Cecil, age 17, and Henry age 11. A mother, five sisters, three brothers and many friends wlyj all mourn her death. Judge Halley Senonrty Hi. At St. Vincent's hospital, Judge Thomas G. Halley, who Is seriously ill as the result of an operation. Is to day In about the same condition as he was yesterday. The registration books close on April 2 and all who do not register betwe-n now and that date will not be permit ted to participate in the primary elec tion. Su perstitious folk In Fond du Lac are greatly concerned at the actions of a black dog, which for weeks past has occasionally appeared In the streets at dead of night, howling dismally. , It is alleged that the appearance of the canine has always been followed by a death In the neighborhood that It chooses for Its nocturnal lamentatolns.
