The party consisting of Snperlnter. tent D. W. Campbell, Division Engl leer William Bollons. General Mai tcr Mechanic J. F. Graham, Master Mechanic J. T. Lnngley nd Dlvislpi. loadmaster H. Jurgens, and ths three Pendleton men mentioned, Ml for the scene of the wreck on art extra trsln and spent.the entire forenoon looking ever the situation. A careful Inspection of the englnt ind track was made and the officials assisted In the Investigation In every way, answering questions and making explanations of the rules of'the road and track condltons and by giving In formation as to the operation of train and engines on the system. It was found by tho committee that the track was In excellent condition and the engine showed no sign of hav Ing a defect In the wheels or otherwls' before the Wreck occurred. The en gine truck wheels left the rail on a to degree curve 1900 feet west of whore the engine was finally wrecked and at the point where the truck wheels left the rail that was absolutely nothing to CHILDREN STAR 1STHTE1 cause a wreck, the tics, rails, bolts and spikes being in normal condition 1 and the gauges and levels used on the track showed that the 'gauge was proper, the elevation of the track cor rect and the rails In excellent condi tion. ''.' The cause of the wreck Is a mystery and while neither the officials nor ti.o committee of citizens desire to censure any one unjustly, the consensus of opinion was that the speed was per haps greater at that point than the employes realized and that the lurch of the engine In rounding the curve caused the wheels of the truck to leave the rail. ' , Had the derailed Wheels not have struck the switch at the Pilot Rock Junction, It Is possible that the train would have run Into Pendleton with the one pair of wheels on the ties, but the switch caused the other wheels to leave the track and caused the wreck. rnranriirUin WWMIIMIVI I Ull III!
