Indications are that 20,000 miners and prospectors will go to northern gold camps during the next few months. Prosperity and high vages reign in every mining camp In Alaska and the British Yukon. In addition the Morgan-Guggenhelm-Havermeyer interests are building the Trans-Ala kan railway tip the Copper River val ley to reach what Henry BratnoBer, for 'years the London Exploration company's copper expert, declared Is the greatest and richest copper district yet discovered anywhere. New gold strikes are reliably reported from the outlying Klondike creeks and from the Stewart, White and Pelly rivers, 'fanana, iioyuituk uuu districts. Many Teariieir Fail. Out of th It would-be . teachers who started upon the recent county laminations In Pendleton, only II succeeded In making passing grade. Three other retired from the game before It waa finished because they feared they ceuld not pass. The questions for the evamlnation were prepared by the state superin tendent and the fact that they were difficult is shown by the number of failures. Addresses In four local churches were made yesterday and last eve ning by Ernest N. Cherrington of Seattle, state superintendent of the Anti-Saloon league, and by W. J. The visit of the two speakers was made In con formity with their policy of reaching every city of size in Washington. "During the past year," said Mr. Herwlg, "the league member have spoken In TOO churches of hte state. In that time they have distributed over B, 000,000 book pages of temper ance literature. "The league is making a hard fight for local option. In advocating local option we favor the precinct, munici pal and county features. That I to say, we wish It possible for the people of a precinct, municipality or county to vote on the liquor question. Upon the petition of 20 per cent of the resi dents, provision must be made either by the city council or the county com missioners for the holding of an elec tion on the question. The decision of the majority will abide." JUDGE S. A, LOWELL REPLIES - (Continued from page 2.) SELDER ment to Uiut liiutorlc instrument which will vest the election of sena tors In the people of each state alike, but the concurrence of three-fourths of the state Is necessary to secure such amendment, and while the pres ent provision remain It seem pre posterous to assume that a single state can elect a democratic legislature and expect or require the member there of to choose a republican senator. The party pledge I have set forth In the above letter wilt be accepted almost without exception by the op ponents of statement No. 1, and by It the direct primary will be saved to the people. All the abuse of the past In the election of senators will there by be obviated and for the sake of the perpetuity of the . primary law, which is the measure In which every patriot Is Interested, It would seem that the advocates of the famous statement No. 1 can well afford to eschew theory and rest upon reason.
