Keavltt, one of the heads of the attached lumber company at North Powder, Is In the city today on business matters. Attorney C. H. Finn returned this morning from Portland. Mrs. Finn, who accompanied htm, Is continuing her visit with her son, Harry. Miss Sylvia Hughey returned this morning to Union after spending a few days wljth her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hughey. Presiding Elder J. D. Glllllan Is at tending a meeting of the board of trustees of the Willamette university at Salem today. Messrs. A contest case over an abandoned homestead was heard in the United States land office yesterday afternoon. Charles Avery and Edward Beathorn were the contesting parties. Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Johnson returned this morning from The Dalles, where they were called to attend the fune ral of Mrs. Johnson's cousin, Mrs. E. C. Chrlsman; wife of Sheriff Chrlsman of Wasco county. Slater and Mrs. Slater's mother, Mrs. Hayes, have all been confined to their home with grip the past few days. Earl Klnzle, who Is clerking In Frank Brown's grocery store in Walla Walla, is reported to be slowly recov erlng from a severe steze of la grippe. Attorney George Cochran Is expect' ed home from Portland tomorrow morning. He went to the metropolis last Sunday evening. Judge Smith Is expected to. arrive this evening or on the morning train, to hear the motion for a change of venue in the Bartlett case, which is set for tomorrow. L. C. Smith has sold a 16-horse power double-cylinder Queen auto to Mr. Shanks'of Imbler. Mr. Smith took the machine to the new owner this morning. Fireman and Mrs. Homer Denny are planning on moving to La Grande early next month. Mr. Denny will fire out of La Grande Instead of on the Pleasant Valley helper engine. This Is what might be termed treacherous weather. The sun shines at times nice and warm, but the neg, lect to put on your rubbers or over, coat may lay the foundation for an at tack of la grippe, which seems to be prevalent from the Atlantic to the Pa cific MARKET DAY. Promoter of Uie System Is In the City Today. Max Zimmerman, a professional market day promoter, is In the city today working up Interest In the plan and without doubt will organize the city, and within a few days will be able to announce the date upon which the first market day will be held In La Grande. Mr. Zimmerman has been organizing market days in various towns in Washington, which have proven successful and resulting In much good to the towns where they are held. It Is their purpose to bring the farmer and townsman Into closer relation with each other and provide a regular and ample market for all the farmer has to sell. Pendleton has just held tls second market day and It proved even more successful than the first, and It Is the plan of the bus inessmen of that city to hold one each month and make market day at Pen dleton a regular Institution of the city.' Mr. Zimmerman is a well known auc tioneer and understands' thoroughly, means of getting the best results. He will remain here ' several days and hopes to Interest the business men In the plan and secure the co-operation of the merchants and all others who have the Interests of the city at heart. Chester Gil lette, murderer of Grace Brown, whose body was found In Moose Lake, was denied a new trial today by the court of appeals. , The Catholic social at the'Vrank O'Hare residence last evening proved an enjoyable affair, especially to adepts at whist. At a meeting of the creditors of th bankrupt estate of K. Mlzoguchl, the well known Japanese contractor, re suited In the election of J. J. Carr at trustee. The appraisers selected are B. O. Frltts. F. P. Chllders and Ban na, who will soon meet and place f value on the property, which consists of Japanese goods, and supplies. It is possible that they will sell in the market for about $500 or 1600, and the liabilities are between $4000 and $5000. Honors "Uncle Joe." Washington, Feb. 18. In a dra- matlc speech today Congressman Bou telle of Illinois, precipitated a re markable demonstration In urging the nomination of "Uncle Joe" Canon for the presidency. It was the 84th an niversary of Cannon's first speech in the house and the occasion was taken advantage of by Boiitelle to recall the fact. Jersey City Realty Brokers. Jersey City, Feb. 18. Burled Miners HomihxI. Wllllamsport, Feb. 18. The 25 men who were burled In Mldvalley coal mine yesterday by the breaking of a reservoir, have all been rescued. They were taken from the mine about mid night. One man was killed under the debris. The living were found In mud up to their hips. Monto Pleads Not Guilty. New York, Feb. 18. Charles W. Morse, the ex-Ice king, today pleaded not guilty to an Indictment charging him with perjury. Hearing was set for next week and he was released on $10,000 ball. Annual Citrus Fair. Cloverdale, Ca)., Feb. 18. Clover dale's annual citrus fair, famed throughout the fruit district of Cali fornia, opened today with an unusual ly large number of exhibitors. Highest Fire In the World.
