C. bulletin. The utilization of cull potatoes, foul grain and grass for seeding purposes Is, .like the planting of low grade fruit trees. a serious mistake .and one which al ways leads to unsatisfactory results, In short the success of any crop rests primarily In the character of the seed which we employ. The influence of seed selection Is well shown by consideration of the development and perfection of the sugar beet The ordinary garden bpet contains from 4 to 5 per cent of cane sugar. By careful selection of seed from exceptionally rich beets, the sugar content of the average beet delivered at the factory has been In creased to 15 and 10 per cent, and Individual beets are found with a su gar content of as high as 20 per cent. At the Illinois station in the same way corn of high starch content, for the manufacture of starch, glucose and alcohol, and of high protein con tent for feeding, has been developed. At the Oregon station also a vetch with high protein content Is being obtained by this process of selection. Thc-egrade of a seed depends in the first place upon Its vitality or power to germinate and secondly upon Its purity or freedom from foreign seeds. The germinating power of the seed may be conveniently tested by placing a definite number of seeds between two layers of canton flannel In an or dinary plnte, moistening the flannel and Inverting over this another plate to prevent evaporation. If kept In a warm place (70 or 80 degrees), af ter 4 to I dnjts the germinated seeds may be counted and the percentage of germination determined. The vitality of the seed fs largely Influenced by methods of curing, age, etc. Records show that only I per cent of a 10-year-old clover seed germinated, whereas 15 per cent of a good seed will grow. A largs acrs-age-of Alberta wheat was a complete1 failure Inst year, due to wheat fresh from the thresher being used for seed before It had properly cured. Probably the greatest amount of adulteration occurs In the small grass seeds. At the Maine station as high as 16 per. cent of foreign seeds were found In alfalfa and clover seed. These Impurities are usually seeds of noxious weeds which by this means are carried far and wide. The pres ence of foreign seeds may be detected - v pouring a small o.uanliy of tb ved to be tested on a piece of white vw nnfl evjml!;lng with a smHl! innirnlfylng class. The ptnltv stnndnrds of the TTnlted 'nlcs require clover nnd alfalfa to be if i'r cent pure with a germination of 85 to 90 per cent. Oftts and wheat !(8 per cent pure, with a germination of 90 to 95 per cent. In foreign coun tries these standards are somewhat higher. J. L. MARS, Contractor and Builder.
