At last the country 1 being aroused on the matter ol exorbitant rate of the express companies, and a deter mined war la to be waged by hlpper for the purpose of compelling theee common carrier to bring their ched ule of price within the bound ot reason. The Interstate commerce commls elon ha taken up the Bubject, and at the present time Is making a rigid Anamination regarding existing con ditions. An examination is being held In Denver involving the rate charged by the varloua express companle both east and west from the middle state and the far west, and the outcome will be watched with much Interest by parties concerned everywhere. Of all corporation doing bunlness with the public, the express com panies are the most grasping. This ha been going on for years, and noth ing waa said about it until within the paat few months. That their de mand are excessive everybody con cede, when their attention I called to the aubject, but nothing has ever been done to compel them to release their grasp on the throat of com merce. The railroad have caught it .on every hand, but strange to relate. the chief robber of all ha been en tirely lost sight of. Now that the sub )ect ha come up and the member of the Interstate commerce commission understand the true conditions. It Is to be hoped that the matter of ex nress rate will be placed on a more reasonable basis. Eugene Guard. With enough changes to make the evening full of attraction to those who went both nights, the Elks' min strel was given last evening for the last time. All the Jokes were new and several song feature that were withheld the first evening, were heard last night. These included songs by Messrs. Mil ler, J. B. Gllham and F. C. Bramwell. These were each of a high class order. New victims suffered at the hands of the Jokers and a In the evening previous fun and mirth -prevailed throughout, except only at auch time aa musical number of classical swing broke the run of fun and kept the audience In rapt attention by virtue of the talent being exhibited. The house was comfortably filled. The lights were defective again last evening and during the Roman Trav esty, Archibald wa hot simultane ously with the disappearance of elec tric light. The gladiator waa equal to the occasion, however, and failed to "die" until light had been brought on the scene. -, The scenic curtain drop to the finale of the opening was even more spec tacular last evening than the evening previous. The Observer waa in error last evening In stating that Mrs. Dra per posed for the light. It was Miss Nell Morton of this city. The slight accident to the curtain the first eve ning marred the effect (lightly, but last night that waa remedied and the final wa a' much more pronounced feature the tost time.
