It affords a lot of comfort at very trifling cost, and it's odd that anybody would be without one. Owing to the hill in freight traffic on all the railroads this winter, large numbers of railroad men are Idle and the members who are working are assessed heavily to help support those whose Jobs have vanished. Eevry day numbers of Idle railroad men pass through the city In every direction seeking employment, but find conditions much the same wher ever they go. , ' Engineers, conductors, firemen and brakemen are among the Idle em ployes who are seen here dully and In all departments the same glut of idle labor Is found. The opening of the North Bank road and the extension of the West ern Pacific are looked upon as possi ble fields for employment, but al ready the operating departments of Tilth those. stems have more appli cations for positions that can be sup plied and railroad men on the O. R. & N'. are wondering what all the idle men are going to do. Pendleton E. O. 2 sx 'x Gtx 'Th lHT.rn Auction." MAY POSTPOMK SEATTLE FA I It. nig Slump In Itcnl Kstap Values at Seattle riuic of Talk. Tvwtlsnd. Ore.. Jan. 16. Because the big slump In real estate values and general financial depression In Seat tle, It Is hlnhly probable that the Ala:ka-Yukon-i aeHlu exposition will be postponed from 1909 until the fol lowing year. Some of the most siib startial business men of the Sound city, backers of the stnunchest klni of the great project, have already started a movement o abandon the plan of holding the fair next year. The reasons for such a movement, which conies as a. big surprise to the whole northwest, Is set forth In detail In an exhaustive editorial by Colonel Blethen of the Seattle Times. Colonel Bbjthen declares that he Is voicing the sentiments of the men who are to supply the "sinews of war" for the exposition. ""he first Intimation that the expo sition directory was tip against a btick vnll In Its efforts to realise on the Hale shore lands which were to sup ply a bulk of the exposition fund, was lirnusht out a couple of weeks ago at 1 hearing of the Washington State ualtmad commission, at Olympla, Alien Seattle real estate men testified .'iider oath that realty values had liopped 25 per cent In Seattle within lie past year. Since then conferences have been leld frequently over the dilemma and efforts have been made to dispose of ;iart of th S. attle shore lands to Port land capitalists, the matter having been laid before the Oregon state' commission for the A.-Y.-P. exposi tion. Members of tile Oregon com mission are wondering what to do for v.,. reuson thev have already pro gressed considerably with plans for the $".0,000 building it will erect at the fair, and steps have been taken to begin collecting both state and Indi vidual county exhibits from the state, $S0,0Ou naving been appropriated for that purpose. SPLENDID TEAM DRILL. El;;iii Itehekalis Entertained Guests With Interesting Floor Prill. ' Those who attended the Joint in- stiil lu 1 1 111 at Elgin lust evening unite today In pronouncing the team drill performed on the floor of the He-' bekah lodge by that team last eve ning as especially fine. Intricate and complicated drills were worked out with precision. The three links, em blematic of Odd Fellowship, was formed by the drilling ladles. The figures "1908" were also perfectly executed.
