Resolutions were adopted to com mit the organization to a campaign for carrying Marlon county dry as a whole at the coming June election, alao to carry It by grouped subdivis ions, and by precincts, the plan being to hold all dry precincts and get as many move as possible If the county cannot be cavi led. in 19118. on the question of adopting the amendments proposed by the Uipior lualcis' association, Marlon 'county voted: yes, 2334: no, 2K64. This was virtually a majority In sup port of the local option law. Hut when the local option question was up on a direct vote Marlon gave a large majority against the law. During the year 1907 the criminal records of the various counties pf the state of Orec-n rcoii S3 mjrJcrs. Of this number, and in spite of the fact that only 10 murderers escape the meshes of the police officials, not single case Is recorded where cap! tal punishment was administered In expiation of the offense. In fact, only. three of the it mur derers were convicted .on belnr tnd. In addition to the 10 unapprehended murderers, a similar number rendered further Investigation useless 'by com mitting suicide immediately after committing their crime. Three alleged murderers were discharged for lack of evidence, and 18 cases, are still awaiting trial. Fifteen sacrifices of human life oc curred while one or the other of the parties were under the Influence of Honor. Forty-three of the murders were perpetrated by means of fire arms Seven by use of the knife or a blunt Instrument, and one, the mur der of ex-Sheriff Harvey K. Brown at Baker City, by upe of a bomb. Jn the entire state there are no murderers awaiting execution. George Blodgutt, murderer of his paramour in the city of Portland In 1906, and convicted of murder In the first de gree, Is still enjoying life, although n prison while awaiting a new trial.
