Washington, Jan. 9. A lively war fare Is now being waged In Washing ton between the authors and compos ers of musical productions, on the one hand, and the manufacturers of "canned music" on the other. Those who woo the ruse believe that they are entitled to a royalty from the makers of phonograph records and gramophone discs who use their mus ical products for mechanical repro duction. To accomplish the protection of the bards from the rapacity of the soul-less corporations, Senator Kitt- Ulge has introduced a bill allowing omposers the control of the mechnh cal rights of the offspring of their ruins. The bill has met with the liter opposition of the mechanical music manufacturers, whn rt,.,.tn that It will probably result In one firm "cornering" the "canned music" market and thus fostering a wicked FRIEND TO FRIEND. The personal recommendations of people who have been cured of coughs and colds by Cham bcrlain s Cough Remedy have done more than all else to make it a staple article of trade and com merce over a large part of the civilized world. The manufacturers assert that If they are compelled to pay royalties to authors and composers, It will cost the public a million dollars a year more for Its mechanical music. The composers reply that the talking ma chine manufacturers make a profit of 68 2-3 per cent on their products and that they can well afford to pay the poor authors a small royalty without raising the price of records to the public. The battle is boMng waged merrily and the unfortunate solons have been forced to give much earn est thought to the subject. Present appearances are that ttie composers will win out and that the dissemina tors of mechanical music will have to say "I?y your leave" to the author before offering a song or other music al production to the public. The Blue Mountain Cough Syrup Is not a new mixture for a cough. It Is an old standby for coughs, colds, la grippe, whooping cough and sore throat. The Dalles Chronicle Is digging up some historical data concerning Wasco county and The Dalles. The follow ing concerning original Wasco county Is Interesting: From o,i data which Is accurate we find that the county of Wasco was organised by the territorial legislature of Oregon, January 11, 1S54. Its boundaries were: "Commencing at the Cascades of the Columbia river, thence running up said river to the point where the southern shore of said river Is Intemected by the south ern boundary of Washington territory (now state), thence cast along said boundary to the eastern boundary of Oregon territory; thence southerly along the eastern boundary of Oregon territory to the southern "oundary of the same; thence to the Cascade mountains; thence northerly along said range of mountains to the place of beginning. On September 22, 1S62, Haker coun ty was set apart from Wasco; on Sep tember 27, same year, that portion now forming Umatilla. Union county was set opart In September, 1864, and Grant county was formed from Was co on October 24, 1882. Since that time Wheeler, Gilliam and Sherman counties have left the mother county.
