King returned last evening from Elgin where he has assisted in sev eral weeks of revival services, Sam R. Haworth returned yesterday from Salem and Portland where he has s ient several weeks. J. B. Smith who ins been running a helper at Pleasant Valley is in the city today visiting fiiends. Swackhammer, who with Mrs. Swackhammer, has been spending the winter in Portland, returned to La Grande this morning to transact business. He reports Mrs. Swackhammer'$ health greatly improved. Chester Hanson, of North Powder, is in the city tne cuosi of his s::?r. Mr. Charles Norris. Mr. Hanson met with an accident a few days ago by which he sustained a very sever sprain of the an kle, which will necessitate his remaining here several weeks to receive medical treatment. Walter E Furgerson, who was former ly one of La Grande's efficient teachers, but who for the past several years has been a resident of California, returned to this city this morning. Mr. Furgerson hat many friends in this city who will be pleased to learn that he conclu ed to make this county his home in the future. LOGGING TOOLS! Ryner was a bartender at the Owl saloon and was charged with relieving agin of this amount while the said Fagin was under the influence of a combination of small beers. This case has occupied the attention of the Circuit court for the past two days and went to the jury last evening at eight thirty. The first ballot stood nine for conviction and three for ac quital. This ratio was maintained until eight thirty this morning when the minor- ority consented to a verdict of guilty. bentence will be imposed March first. Yesterday afternoon Jude Crawford im posed a santance of a one hundred dollar fine upon H. C. Cotner who was charged with permitting gamblmc within the Owl SaLon. then his property. The court also imposed a fine of two hundred dollars upon Law Anderson, charged with sell ing liquor with out a licence. The crime took place at the Minam. VE1T CASE TODAY The trial cfVeit. a Japanese charged with breaking into a dwelling and remov ing a watch aid other property of aGreek is being heard today. Attorney Aswell is the attorney for the defense. It is supposed that the case will go to the jury tonight. AMUSEMENT ARCHBISHOP GALLAGHtR'5 BIRTHDAY (Scrlppa News Association) Galveston, Texas, Feb. 1 9. A flood of congratulations uoured in at the archieo s- copal residence today on the occasion of tna ,iy-Krst b'.r'.nj of Archbishop Gallagher. The messages came from all parts of the province, which takes in the whole of Texas and parts of Oklahoma and Indian Territory.
