The origin of St Valentine's day, which will be celebrated today will always bean interesting subject to those who observe the customs of the day. The House keeper gives the following brief but com prehensive sketch of the .ay: A fact in natural history, to-wit: that birds in Southern Europe pair about the middle of February, is said to have inspired a custom of the ancient Romans, to which the origin of the modern valen tine can undoubtedly be traced. At the feast of the Lupercalia, held in honor of the great-gcxfPan, the names of the virgin daughters of Rome were put in a box, and drawn therefrom by the young men. Each youth was bound to offer a gift to the maiden who fell in his lot, and to make her his partner during the time of the feast. How this secular custom became al lied to the name of a saint is alto gether a different mattei. St Valen tine was a bishop of Rome during the third century. In Allen Butler's "Lives of the Saints" we read that the zealous Christian fathers tried to substitute the names of saimsfor those of girls in the lottery game, but withou success. City Marshal of La Grnd9.0;? A telegram from Okanagon Falls, B. C, to Mr. and Mr. W. J. Snodgrass last Tuesday, informed the parents that their son John D. Snodgrass died suddenly last Tuesday. In complying with the request of the wire, which asked that instructions be wired back relative to funeral arrange ments, W. J. Snodgrass has gone to Seattle where he will take a boat for the nearest seaport to the inland town from whence came tho news of death. The telegram notifying La Grande re latives of John's death, was preceded the day before by one from the deceased's wife saying briefly. "John very ill Tuesday, the following day, came the announcement of his death. No paiti culars were attached as to the circum stances. It is not known whether he was at Okanagon Falls or further in the in terior when death came. There are ns undertakers in the place and the body will be packed in ice until it reaches a town, where the remains can be properly treated. Tuesday evening W. J. Snodgras left for the north to meet the body. Since his departure a wire has been received from Mrs. Snodgrass saying that the body would be staged to Stmmerland. This is a new town and no one in this city knows where it is located. Mr, Snodirrass will receive. a wire from La Grande when he arrives at Vernon, tell ing him of the town where his son now lies. Due to the uncertainty of wfere the body actually is and the distance it is from rapid transit, the body will not like ly arrive in La Grande until Monday night at th earliest and possibly not un til Tuesday. Nd arrangement have been made for the funeral a yet. The deseased was thirty-nine year of age and leaves an immediate family of his wife and one child.
