The state jute mill is not looked upon with favor by the legislature and the bill isnot expected to receive favorable consideration. The city election gives promise, of be ing a entertaining one. Only a few more days in which to bring out your petitions. If you are going to be in the race, better prepare for the start. With plenty of moisture and an abun dance of sunshine combined with the best soil in the state, there should be no ques tion regarding the coming harvest. There never is any question in the Grande Ronde valley. The "Atlantic Georgian" has discover ed that Senator-elect Wm. Alden Smith used to play the drum in a village band. He ought to prove quite an addition to the now famous Tilman Minstrels. Eu gene Registei. THOMAS CONDON In the death of Professor Thomas Con don the state of Oregon suffers a distinct loss. His was a life and character that has left an indelible impression upon the state that time can never efface. As an educator he has tanked with the fore most men of his time, as a citizen his life was a model after which young men were wont to fashion their on lives and were always given a higher conception of what constitutes ideals of citizenship by coming in contact with him. As a scientist, he was unexcelled by any man in the West and steod on a level with the geologists, of his day. He understood the geological formation of Oregon as thcr oughlyas if he had made earth formation himself and his works, both written and otherwise, will stand as a lasting monu ment to his genius. 4 The entire slate of Oregon will feel keenly the doath of this gieat and good man. POLITICS AND POLITICIANS Charles E, Hughes, Governor of New York; Edward C, Stokes, Governor of New Jersey, and James H. Higgins, Gov ernor of Rhode Island, are graduates of Rmw Univsrity. John P. St. John, who was the first Prohibition governor of Kansas, is now living at Brownsville, Texas, where he has made a fortune during the past few years in land speculation. Percival W. Clement, the twice-defeat- candidate for Governor of Vermont, has been sued by Senator Redfield Proctor on the ground that he has converted to his own use for political gain certain pro perty belonging to the Rutland Herald, in which paper both men are interested as stockholders. Senator Taliafero of Florida and Sena tor Simmons of North Carolina look enough alike to be twin brothers. They are about the same size and build, each has a heavy crop of dark hair, which is kept closely trimmed, ; and their short stubby mustaches are much alike. Both have dark eyes, and there is probably not two pounds difference in t-.eir res pective weights. Frank O. Briggs, who succeeds John F. Dryden as United States Senator from New Jersey, is a poor man. For thirty years past he has been a salaried em ployee of the Trenton firm that built the Brooklyn Bridge. Mr. Briggs had served one term as mayor of Trenton when he was appointed state treasurer by Gov ernor Voorhees. Subsequently he was re-elected to the office. In 1904 he was made chairman of the Republican state committee and managed the the cam paign which resulted in the election of Governor Stokes. j CITY PROPERTY 1 1 FARM, FRUIT AND I llTIMBER LANDS I MONEY LOANED! II MclLROY & HIBBERD ELGIN, OREGON. i LEGIONS IN RUSSIA Millionsof peasants who voted in the Russian elections did so under the shadow of the scaffolds of a hundred military courts, with no humane ripht that any officer was bound to respect. Why did the Government order elections? Be cause there is a power ir. Russia above the Czar. "The foreign money-lenders are now Russia's real parliament," a famous Russian publicist said recently. A higher power than the Czar has or dered the elections. The financiers de mand those qualities from governments that they demand from currency per manence and stability. Unfortunately for Nicholas, the modern capitalist can picture stability in government without some kind of a reference to what the nation wants. So a second Duma there had to be. CURED OF LUNG TROUBLE "It is new eleven years since I had a narrow escape from consumption," writes C. O. Floyd, a businessman of Kershaw S. C. "I had run down in weight to 138 poundi, and coughing was constant, both by day and by night. Finally 1 began continued this for ahout six months, when my cough and lung trouble were entirely gone and I was restored to my normal weight, 1 70 pounds.
