It will 1 take some time yet before a sufficient ' Hiimh., ft mm ..an k AivArA trt rnllAVA the actual demands of business. How ever the railroads are doing everything within their power to get cars as speedily as possible. It is not every country that outgrows their transportation facilities. Asa rule, auch companies keep in advance of the development and are great factors (n assisting such general development, but tho past two years have been a record breaker. Chehalis Washington will soon vote up on the propasition of a municipal water and electric light plant. The revocation of free passes will un doubtedly have tha effect of lessening the lobby that usually ia in great evidence during the session of the legislature. Crime seems to be running with a high hand in Portland. . Hardly a day passes but what some one is either murdered or waylaid. The police are apparently pow erless. While it is all speculation at- this time, who will be the standard bearer on the Republican ticket in 1 908, there ia no question but what Mr. Bryan will be called upon for the third time to lead the Democrats, and ii the Republicans per mit the trusts and corporations to control their convention, they will have trouble in maintaining their old time majorities. Mr. Bryan has been before the people for many years and the masses are not as afraid of him as they were a few years ago. Walla Walla ia undergoing a smallpox scare. A number of cases have been re- porcea 10 tne neaitn omcer and it is thought that many have net been report ed wnere no physicians have been called. This sounds natural to Oregonians. There is a dead lock in the Rhode Island legislature over the election of a United States senator." Thanks to tha good judgment of our people, we have passed such possibilities. With slab wood from the Grande Ronde LuTiber Company at Perry, the Palmer Lumber Company of this city, with the possibility of another large saw mill being located in this vicinity, the question of fuel will not be such a serious matter another year. United States Senator elect Norris Brown of Nebraska will give President Roosevelt another member of the upper house who can be depended upon. Brown gained great prominence in his state as a trust fighter. While holding the office of Attorney General he dissolved the Ne braska grain and lumber trusts. A bill is before the legislature of Wash ington for a direct primary law quite similar to tha Oregon law. This law has worked wonders for Oregon and with such a splendid record befor. them, unless the bosses own the Washington legisla ture, they will pass the bill. Senator Spooner gave Senator Tillman such a dressing down in the senate yes terday that made the wielder of the pitch fork writhe but he had to take hie med icine which was full strength. For once Tillman has found a man whom his bull dozing policy does not throttle. Lewiston and Clarkston have raised $9000 to advertise the two cities. The committee on subscription started out to raise $10,000 and say that victory is in sight. With such a spirit, is it any wonder that the city of Lewiston is growing? The cold wave has resulted in not a few stoves which are connected with water mains, exploding. A Northport Wash ington man waa seveny injured. It is well to be cautious. STATIONERY . Small embroidery hooks Street hats One Dollar. SWITCHES .E. M. Wellman & Company: ADAMS AVENUE The trend of the times is reflected by the messages of the many governors, aent to their respective legislatures. From coast to coast, the rights of the common people are receiving attention as never ore. Machine politics will soon be a thing of the past. One of the factors that is to bring this about is the large in dependent vote that is growing with each election, mis country should mainU n two dominant political parties and this indepent vote will force them to adopt aid carry out their platforms. The time was when platforms were framed with the intention of carrying them to victory but too often these only proved to be election promises. Action, not promises, counts in this age. CURED Of LUNG TROUBLE -ii is new eieven years since 1 had a narrow escape from consumption," writes C. O. Floyd, a businessman of Kershaw, S. C. Finally I began taking Dr. King's New Discovery, and continued this for about six months, when my cough and lung trouble were entirely gone and I waa restored to my normal weight, 170 pounds.
