, New York, Jan. 16. At. a meeting of
representee Jews here today the pro
jected Jewish Colony near Galveston, Tex.,
was fully discussed. . It was decided to
acquire land for settlement for Jews who
will be brought from Russia and other
countries. It was announced that the
scheme had the support of the Rotschilds
and the leading Jews of England who had
promised large donations towards the
work.

election to the senate at confirmed at
noon today. He spoke, thanking the leg
islators and said that he had withdrawn
from all business interests and would de
vote himself to direct interest of the state
and nation, fie declared that he is free,
untrammelled, is under no obligations to
any interest, railroad or corporation. He
favors Roosevelt's plans and will aid leg-i
islation to correct all industrial -evils.
New York Jan 16 The Smelter Trust
headquarters announces that Simon
Guggenheim has resigned from all official
relations with the American Smelting and
Refining Company, his resignation qeing
accepted. He will retire from all active
business.

Tire broke out immediately after the quake
and completed the destruction. Business
section are a smouldering heap. Church
es, pubi c offices and hotels are gone.
Thousands are injured and the killed will
number close to four hundred. .
New York, Jan. 16 The above cable
gram received here this evening and is
the first communication the outside world
has had with the stricken city since the
terrible catastrophe. Other ' ad vices say
that loss of life was mostly to natives.
THREE HUNDRED DEAD

estimates that there were two thousand
Americans visiting Kingston at the time
of the tremor. Dispatches from this city
say that the city of Kingston is practic
ally ruined. The estimate of the dead
places the figure at three hundred, this
total being given as a conservative one,
Bostonjan, 10 The United Fruit Com
panyhas been informed that the mercantile
section about Kingston t including their
omces, are completely destroyed by the
fire and quake. Several hundred are
dead according to this dispatches.
London, Jan. 16 Dispatches from
Kingston are scanty and contradictory.
They indicate that the first reports of the
disaster were exaggerated but the con
ditions therj are grave. The area of de
struction extends fat miles around what
was formerly a beautiful city but now a
moss of ruins. The shocks were felt from
fifty to sixty miles distant. Tamnorarv
cables from Bull Bay say that not a single
house between there and Kingston is safe.
. Boston, Jan. 1 6 The steamer Dewey
sails today with miscellaneous cargo for
Kingston. '

London. Jan. 19 Thirty soldiers were
killedbythe collapss of the military hospital
at Kingiton, Jimaica. yertorday. When
the earthquake cam these men ware all
in the hospital and the tremor caused the
collapse. No officials of the hospital were
killed but Major Heads and many others
are seriously injured. Captains Young and
Constantine of the Royal Steam Packet
Company were killed.

the quake is decreasing, but light shocks
still continue and many buiidincrs which
were shaken loose and a4-Jiut knocked
down by the fir6t heavy shock, "are now
ailing because of Ihe Decisional shocks

officer in this is preparing to send relief
from neighboring British colonies,
Hamburg Jan. 16 The American linen

of a city on the Canadian side of the river

cost $25,000,000 and employ 6.000 men

La Grande and vicinity was hit bv a cold
nap eat ly last night which ended at sud
denly as it came. . About eight o'clock, it
came on. and at 10 o'clock the' mercury
dropped to 2 degrees below zero and half
an hour later, it fell another point, ' Their.
suddenly, the thermometer went up and
by eleven o'clock, it was four degress
above zero. From fourabevethe mercury
fluctuated to five and six above during the
morning.
COLD IN PENDLETON
The thermomator according to the
Pendleton Tribune registered eight degrees
below zero night before last.
