A prominent London physician is out with the statement that candy is a sure preventative for consumption. It will not take the average American youth very long to take advantage of this argument to secure an increase in the appropriation for sweetmeats. Not a few of the citizens of Marioa county are up in arms and there is talk of a general mass meeting to protest against the tax levy as made by the county court. Something similar to the protest that went up, in this county last year with reference to the assessment, which was made on a full valuation. Those who have not kept in close touch with the active work the Hood River people have been doing for years, in way of advertising their valley as a fruit producing section, wonder how they have secured such a wide world reputa tion. Their success is the result of con stant and united action, never lettine an 0 1 opportunity pass by. To illustrate there '6 j is now in session at Portland a meeting of the Oregon Fruit Growers, along with it being a display of Oregon fruit. Hood River is there with 200 boxes nicely ar ranged. The Willamette valley has ISO boxes and only.a few from the other fruit sections of the state. Hood River is al ways in evidence at such gatherings. Our readers will remember that Hood River people were the life of the North west Fruit Growers Association which met io La Grande just one year ago. There were more Hood River people here than from any other section of the state. They had steamers flying from the lapels of their coats, Metals galore from victor ies won in previous fruit displays. Everyone in our city knew that Hood River was on the map every minute of the three days session. It is just such work as this that has brot Hood River before the public. It is true they grow good fruit but it is also true that the world would never have known very much about it had not that progressive community taken advantage of every opportunity to . let the world know it. In eeason and out of season Hood River is always exploiting the productive ness of their goil. They have succeeded and they deserve success. Furthermore what has been accomplished by this com munity can be accomplished by any other fruit growing section of the state by similar methods It will require years bat we must rememoer 'that Hood River did not jump to the front in any one sea son. It required many. A. T. HILL. ; Prescription Dru&ist LA GRANDE. OR "eeeeeeee eeeeeeeee "'aaeaeeeeeeeeVeeeaaaeeeeaaaaaeaaaaaaa t A convention of the assessors of the slate is in session this week at Portland. They are in favor of taking the tax col lecting department away from the sLeriff and giving it to the assessors. If a change is to be made there is some merit in their contention. The assessor's information secured in making the assessment would be of assistance in collecting the same. LA GRANDE IRON WORKS D.' FITZGERALD. Proprietor j '' ' ;v ' .' ' i i . ' M; Wellriiari & Company: i ADAMS AVENUE Governor Gooding of Idaho is strongly in favor of a state railroad commission clothed with full power to establish max. imum freight rates, enforce entire public ity in relation to railroad transportation. to follow closely the lines of the Federal law. A commission endowed with proper power would be of great advantage to every state in the Northwest. Without power they would simply be a burden to the tax payers. A number of counties in the state for sevi ral years have held successful poul- shows. The idea has been suggested i this county at various times. An exhibi tion of this kind would doubtless prove a revelation to a great majority of our people as we have many fine blooded fowls, many more than one would sup pose without giving the subject investiga tion. The poultry business of this county is the means of no small revenue and is capable of being extended. A poultry exhibition would have the affeot of calling attention to the advantages of extensive poultry raising in this county.
