4 4 8 j AMUSEMENT Mr. Jesse Hale, who plays the Indian. Washtah, in "At Cripple Crtek", has had a picturesque and varied career. Born upon his father's schooner during a terri fic sale on Lake Erie, Hale seemed fated J'or a gloomy existence; and his lifs voy age has so far been streaked with ad venture and experiences that do not fall to the lot of the average stey-U-horre pei son. He served one term in the Arizona Legislature, and for a time of ficated as Secretary to the Governor. When the Spanish-American war broke out, the late Capt. "Buckey" O'Neill whose heroic death while leading a charge up San Juan Hill thrilled the hearts of newspaper readers, end whose last words, "Who wouldn't die for jnoth er star in the flag?" deserved to be cherished along with final utterances of ' 4w'8t'neu'sn9 ead. ser' Hale a tele graphic request to organize a regiment of Rough Riders in his town. This the young editor did, his office serving as a recruiting station, : He was connected with stock compan ies on the Atlantic coast fcr two seasons. V and is versatile to a degree. He is es pecially well equipped in voice and tem perament for the legitimate drama, hav ing been highly commended in such parts as "Antonio" in "The Merchant of Ven ice," "Mercutio arid Tybalt" in "Romeo and Juliet", "C3s:a" in "Julius Caesar", etc. Last season he played "Majatesta" in Whitney's revival of "Francesca da Rimini." Mr. Hale makes a good Indian, (not meaning that he is a "dead one") and his performance is attracting attention. Stewards Opera house Tuesday, Jan. 8. Notable among the coming attractions "at Steward's opera house, Thursday, Jan uary 10, is Countess Olga von Hatzfeldt, the clever little prima donna comedienee whom Milton and Sargent Aborn advanced to stardom last season in Anna Held's former starring vehicle, "The Little Duch ess." This is one of the most elaborate musical productions ever staged, and the new stir made as pronounced a hit in it last year as did her predecessor. The Countess is surrounded by a big company of comedians and pretty girls, and she is most ably seconded by the clever com' edian, Robert Lett, who is also to be a. starred next season in a new musical comedy.
