There is no question but what there is an element that would like to see things brot about whereby it would be possible for the legislature to set aside the voice of the people as expressed, whereby Johnathan Bourne should be their next have been sent out but tie popular feel ing is S3 strong that there seems no prob ability of the schemers being success ful. This being the first opportunity of electing a sena, or under the new law.it is paramount that the program as in tended be car-ied out to the letter. The principal is at stake, not the man upon whom the honor is to be conferred. The people by a large majority have tiken this means to elect their senators by a direct vote. They have done so, now let the leijisiature establish this custom tor all the time to come. ADVEKIiriiNU KATKH mplay Ad rates rurnlshed upon p,nlctlor iOcalreacllDKDoilu 10c per line nrsl law,. The Oregon legislature, the Moyer- Haywood trials in Idaho and Con gress, all promise to furnish the news papers a great deal of interesting matter during the next two months. It is just possible that Senator John B Foraker thinks that he sees an opportu nity to side track President Roosevelt as a candidate in 1908. thru his attack on the President in removing those colored regiments. It n more than probable that before he gets thru with his tactics, his tory will record the fact that Foraker ATTENTION Forresters of America are herebv noti fied that the recular annual election nf Officers-Physician and druggist will be field at our meeting on Thursday. The J ; Observer pointed out, a day or two-after J i theGi vernor made this remarkable claim. nit the lowness of the tax levy was due o the fact that the main appropriation bill was being held up by a referendum, jnd that state officials had not levied any .f- I U;x to D.v a liri?e amount nf thetn an $' '. .., j propriations. and that the next levy of X J 5ta,a taxes would have to be increased "LA GRANDE SUGAR" None Belter. None Purer.' None Sweeter. Use La Grande Sugar and lis n) otti e i aoove the usual levy to pay for these appropriation. Some of the governor's henchmen took offense at this contention of the Observer. Word now comes from Salem to the effect that the state taxes llrs year will have to be nearly twice as n ih as last year, and that this is due to li e fact that last year no levy was made to pay a large amount of the appropria t .-ns made by tho last legislature and t".at these ha.'e to be paid now. The Governor ought now to explain how he care t0 be guilty of such a demagogic p.eas as this. If the Governor ur. jor takes to discuss the tax questen he wi.l hara.y Uke the position that he did in h campaign speeches.
